  1. Ruth's Chris?

    Or maybe Hamburger Hamlet?

Zeke's Smokehouse (in Montrose) for some 'Que?

Porto Alegre to gorge on Brazil's take on "meat (and more) meat and potatoes"?

    1. Fogo De Chao Beverly Hills or Parks BBQ. Both are a meat lovers Disneyland.

      Fogo De Chao
133 N La Cienega Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90211

      Park's BBQ
955 S. Vermont Ave, Suite G, Los Angeles, CA 90006

      1. Roy's has one of my all time alternative meat & potato dishes, the short ribs with mashed potatos. Absolutely devine. Unfortunatly, it is not on the Pasadena Summer prix fixe menu, but you can get the petite filet, which still is a great deal with an appetizer and the chocolate souflee.

Meat and potatoes = Water Grill?

          Water Grill
544 South Grand, Los Angeles, CA 90071

No, the best part of that post by ocshooter is this classic line ... "so what type of food do you like?"

Uh, how about "meat n' potatotes"?

I will add something to this however,
There are a couple of Shabu Shabu places downtown that would be a fun birthday.

There was a recent thread on Pasadena steakhouses that may be of interest as well.

On the casual end, Wurstkuche has great sausage and beer and an appropriate party atmosphere.

I would also suggest First and Hope for their modern take on comfort food with a supper club atmosphere.

...And sweet potato fries also (at Wurstkuche)!

I changed it... it just took me a few minutes to realize my error.

          2. Thanks everyone! Great recs!!
One of my friends asked me about this saying she wanted something "different", so I asked her what was "normal". Then she said that it was for a friend's birthday. I asked what he liked and the answer was "meat and potatoes". There you have it.
I think the shabu shabu would fill different. Maybe even a Korean BBQ place. I am going to send her all your wonderful thoughts on this. Thanks again!! L

Brainfreeze initially from Persian cucumber ice cream overdose.... Recovered in time to recommend Arroyo...

                2. The Derby in Arcadia
                  Damon's in Glendale
                  Colombos in Eagle Rock
Polka in that weird area between Glendale, Highland Park, Atwater

                  1. Taylor's in Korea town or there is one in La Canada. Can't get more meat and potatoes than steaks and baked potatoes.

                    1. Within your preferred locale, I would most likely opt for the Arroyo Chop House. They offer an array of over a dozen different steaks and chops, all of them USDA Prime. In addition, they serve potatoes at least five different ways.

Not one disappointment in over a half-dozen visits. Competent food preparation, superb ambiance and service.

mmmm...nothing makes a birthday special like competent food. it makes the whole occasion just so satisfactory.

This carnivore would want to be taken to Arroyo Chop House, for the ambiance, the scallop and bacon appetizers, the large cut filet mignon (in my opinion one of the most flavorful filets on offer anywhere) and the sourdough (order it "half and half", a basket of half warm sourdough and half warm garlic sourdough).
