El Sabor de Michoacan paletas in Thornwood
There's a tiny new Mexican take-out place opposite Shoprite (near Subway and Dino's pizza). I think it's called El Sombrero. Stopped in for a quick look the other day and was struck by the warm Mom-and-Pop vibe. It was too hot to eat much so we grabbed a chicken quesadilla (with rice and beans) which was perfectly fine. But the paletas! Really what I wanted in the heat. They have a good selection, maybe 20 flavors in a small freezer case. Also various mexican grocery items. We'll be back. I hope this place does well.

Stopped in and tried El Zarape the other day. The food was passable, but not great. The salsa and hot sauce was very fresh-tasting and flavorful, but the meats were quite bland. I had tacos -- carne asada, carnitas and al pastor -- all of which seemed a bit flavorless and dry. Beans and rice were standard fare. Prices were good, with a full meal, including 3 tacos, beans and rice for about $6.50. Along with the tacos, they offer burritos, and quesadillas with few unique offerings, including chicharrones and lengua. Plenty of Mexican sodas and, of course, those tasty paletas. I had a coconut with strawberry -- yum!
Overall, a mediocre experience, but I'll certainly try it again sometime. They were incredibly nice people and I'd love to see them succeed. They'll have to step up the flavors in their food, however, if they want to stand beside other locally regarded mom-and-pop Mexican eateries, like Los Abuelos.

I've been here around ten times so far. It's been hit or miss for me. I usually order something from the steam table with rice and beans. I've had more luck with the pork dishes than the chicken dishes. I keep going back because they constantly change what's available on the steam table and everything tastes home made.
It's not as good as Mexican places in Port Chester, but it's close to work for me.

re: Robotron
Didn't notice this thread before. This place is unique: it's like your Mexican mom cooking lunch for you.
Which means nothing real intricate or full of flare. Which means they're not best for tacos and tortas and such. Get the steam table stewy stuff, don't expect impressive flavor sensations, and experience what it's like to come home from school in Mexico City. That's a rare thing (and, note, they're not Pueblan, so it's a different vibe).
Also, don't go after 2pm or so. The steam table stuff is freshness-aimed at the lunch crowd.

I stopped in for their rice pudding pop(my favorite), delicious with a few raisins mixed in. These pops come from a store on North Ave. in New Rochelle. Althought they do not carry the vast selection that the New Rochelle store does, I am thrilled that I do not have to make the trek down to New Rochelle anymore. I hope they are successful; Spread the word!

Great to hear! I, too, drove by a while back and was curious. I'd forgotten about it until reading this! Can't wait to check it out. Always in the mood for good, homestyle Mexican. Los Abuelos in Ossining is always a thumbs up for tasty, authentic Mexican meals and Peleteria Fernandez in Port Chester rocks for its incredible assortment of fresh paletas. But this Thornwood place will certainly be closer for my gotta-have-it penchant for frozen pops. Thanks so much for your post!
