roasted sea salt?

edgarallanho Jul 19, 2010 06:26 AM

Currently in Shanghai and I walked into a Korean supermarket that sold a variety of salts, several being roasted sea salts. Now, I'm pretty sure this isn't the same thing as regular salt as one brand sold four different kinds of salt: seaweed salt, garlic salt, sea salt, and roasted sea salt.

What is this and how is it different?

Perhaps a smoked sea salt? Simply roasting won't do anything to affect flavor but when you smoke it obviously it will get smoky. Its a good way to introduce smoky flavor without using the grill. Similar to using smoked paprika or chipotle powder.

Here's an online link that says ...

"This bamboo salt is made by roasting sea salt in bamboo stalks that are sealed with clay
The salt absorbs minerals from the bamboo and clay which purifies the salt "
