good eats, moderate cost, between midtown and the village

American, continental, Italian, spanish cuisine. Just want some really good food and a place where 4 of us can hear each other talk. Maybe something off the beaten path. Main courses <$30. Is this possible in Manhattan? Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

  1. Casa Mono if you want Spanish.

I love Casa Mono, but I'm not sure the cost is moderate, unless one ordered very few dishes. Also, I find it is often quite noisy.

Ditto. I think you'll end up spending more than "main courses < $30" indicates and it gets really loud and crowded in there.

    2. For modern Spanish cuisine, I'd stay in Midtown and go to La Fonda del Sol, around the corner from Grand Central, on the street level of the MetLife Building. We ate in the very attractive and comfortable dining room, but there is also a more casual bar/lounge. Main courses are in the $20's. They're participating in Restaurant Week.

For Italian, I'd go to Bottino, "off the beaten path," on 10th Av., b/t 24th & 25th Sts. Pastas are in the teens; main courses in the $20's. There's a lovely back garden.

For contemporary American, I'd go to Recette, in the West Village. Small and large plates. Teens and $20's.

You could also consider going to Keens. Unless you have gargantuan appetites, the Porterhouse for two can easily feed four. Ergo, the cost = <$30pp. Even if you chose the Porterhouse for three, it would be exactly $30pp.
