What are the must hit trucks at the LA Street Festival?

My fiancee and I will be coming in from out of town for the week concluding with the festival. We paid the extra 20 bucks per person for the VIP tickets. Which vendors are can't miss? I really appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Brian

  1. I posted about this a few days ago (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/7210...) and found that a surprising (to me, at least) number of Hounds are taking a pass on this event - but I'm excited! I didn't get to go to the last one and I don't have access to a lot of trucks. I haven't tried most of the participants but I can recommend CoolHaus - their "Dirty Mint" ice cream is unbelievably good! I'm also looking forward to Scoops Westside, as the original Scoops is great.

Here's the list, for anyone who's interested:

    Antojitos Carmen
    Antojitos La Abuelita
    Border Grill Truck
    Cemitas y Clayudas Pal Cabron
    Crazy Creole Café
    Crepe’n Around

Hope you have a good time! I'm not sure about the menu of these trucks, but here's the ones I would recommend with some dishes they really sparkle at...

Antojitos Carmen - The Fried Quesdillas, especially with squashblossom or Huitlacoche
Antojitos La Abuelita - Clayuda, the best in L.A.!
Dogzilla Hot Dogs - Yakisoba Dog!
      Mariscos El Tetos - Caracol!
      Mo-Chica - Causa or Ceviche
      Monsieur Egg - Crab Cakes
Starry Kitchen - Crispy Tofu Balls
CoolHaus - any of their ice cream sandwiches!
      Natura Bar - Rompope Raspado!
Scoops Westside - Any of their flavors

Everything else is just up to your tastes. IME of these things, the grilled cheese truck was the most popular, but I find their offerings meh. On the other hand almost equally popular fry smith always hits it. Also, I'm not sure exactly when you are getting in, but if you are staying anywhere near LAX there is a food truck lot on Tuesdays that is a lot of fun and is going to have several of these same trucks. Here's the schedule

      Have a great time!!

Very helpful, Dommy - thank you!

We are getting in on Wednesday, bummer as that Tuesday deal sounds great. I love the tips and will definitely be making a point to hit the spots on the list.

          Thank you so much,
          Brian

      2. I think "can't miss" is subjective, but I can tell you that I am especially looking forward to trying Dogzilla Hot Dogs, Flying Pig Truck, Gastrobus, Grilled Cheese Truck, Starry Kitchen, and Scoops.

Ones I've enjoyed in the past (either the truck or the restaurant) include Border Grill, Frysmith, Mo-Chica, Monsieur Egg, Tiara Café, CoolHaus, and King Kone.

I'd skip Mandoline Grill and Dim Sum Truck. The former has bad food, the latter is fine but nothing special.
