A few worthy stops in Southern OR
I am absolutely no expert in Thai food but want to post about a newish place in Talent that doesn't seem to have been noticed - Bangkok Atchara. Benny is gone but partner Atchara who was the force behind the food has a charming restaurant on E. Main that replaces the funky trailers known as Bangkok Benny's. The lime green storefront has two rooms, maybe 10 tables?, plus a small counter and is beautifully decorated in a cozy Asian style. I would go again just to sit there even if I hadn't enjoyed the food - which I did! I had #21 and my dining partners had #20. Both were peanut saucy with crispy vegetables and a choice of meat. I will be more exploratory on my next trip and certainly try the Tom Kah soup which was superb from the trailers so I hope she has not changed her recipe!
Everyone knows by now about New Sammy's but another addition to the Talent scene is a small shop named Sweet. Salted caramels and other delights - all excellent. The Downtowne Coffee House a half block away has great espresso nad service but I haven't eaten there yet. Both are on Talent Avenue.
In Jacksonville, Gary West Meats has opened (or reopened) a casual cafe called Locavore featuring of course grass fed local beef and bison, Rogue Creamery cheeses, their own house cured meats. Great sandwiches, definitely sharable especially if they come with the fresh potato chips which evidently aren't an every day thing. Or have the Fry Wreck along side. There are a couple of tables inside and a really nice shady patio with more seating. In the evenings, they grill there as well. And of course it is still a great place to get specialty foods with a local emphasis and has a large wine selection as well. Another plus is that is a bit off the beaten tourist path, across from the Ray's and another block or so toward Medford - sorry, can't remember the street name.
