Will be staying in avila the week of dh's bday and this is his favorite dessert. Would be willing to go fairly far for a superior pie. Also have other family staying in cayucos and Lompoc so they could hook me up...ideas? Thanks.

  1. Madonna Inn is great for pies and a lot of other old-fashion comfort foods done fresh and done well. My favorite is their half BLT and salad with fresh blue cheese dressing that is practically a meal in itself ..... and then the pie to take the whole thing over the top.

There is a very good fresh key lime pie in Salinas at Bahama Grill downtown, but think your father may like Madonna Inn better for a special occasion.

      Do they sell whole pies?

Pricey when you think how cheap it is to make a lemon meringue pie at home: http://www.madonnainn.com/bakery.php

The chain Marie Callender's has a lemon meringue pie for $12 and you can order it online in its Pismo Beach restaurant for pick up which your relatives can pick up on their way up to San Luis Obispo. Okay pies, nothing great but the price is right.

If you or someone in your family has access to a kitchen, look at a box of Kingsford corn starch, they have the lemon meringue pie recipe I have used for year and it is very good - secret is to put the cornstarch in the water the night before so it blooms nicely and gets rid of the raw starch flavor. Use a graham cracker crust or even a store bought pie crust and you have a good fresh pie yourself in short order.

Mrs Smiths frozen lemon meringue pie at the major grocery stores is not all that bad and a lot cheaper than Madonna Inn, but the Madonna Inn does use quality ingredients and you know it is fresh.

In my opinion, anything from the Madonna Inn bakery is worth the price. When i lived closer to SLO, i would often stop in for a late night slice of pie or cake.

The Madonna Inn is such a contrast. The decor is so kitschy and fake and the food is so real. I had avoided it for such a long time on our trips up and down 101 because we would only go for the laughs at the decor, but after re-exploring it a few months ago, I realized it has some very good food as well.

Good solid American classics. Like lemon meringue pie, BLT's and blue cheese salad dressing. Yum.

It's called the Copper Café at the Madonna Inn.
