Miami Spice 2010

non sequitur Jul 17, 2010 07:43 AM

Only 2 weeks away and not even a mention? Perhaps the idea of assembly line fine dining has caused it to fall from favor among the 'hounds.

Still, to ensure that this board can continue to be a one-stop compendium for the masses, here is the link to this year's restaurants:

I'll probably hit Scarpetta (my 2009 favorite) and Bourbon Steak (because it's close).

Any other standouts or new additions?

in my opinion miami spice started out as a great idea for chefs to showcase their talents and restaurants exhibiting great value and hope people were so impressed they would return to pay full price later on.Over the years it has degenerated into restaurants going through the motions and serving chilean salmon, roast chicken,or churrasco like early bird meals with only a free dessert being the difference between their normal pricing.I would much prefer that restaurants just give 20-25% off their regular menu prices. This would enable the consumer to try the restaurant's regular food and gauge a return visit at normal prices based on their experience.I'm interested to see if other chowhounds have felt that miami spice has gone downhill over the years with one or 2 exceptions and if we would be better served with the regular menus at these restaurants at a discounted price.

Nope - at this point all there is to discuss is who is in and who is out, and who is new.

I gave up on planning the visit based on the posted menus because (a) they frequently change when you get there and (b) you can't really go by an eloquent description, unless you've tried the dish already.

But as pointed above, some originality beyond salmon/chicken/churrasco is appreciated.

agreed. let's see how eager these restaurants are for business or if they resort to the insulting bar mitzvah menus of steak, chicken or salmon. zzz

          Many menus now posted.

-Scarpetta has the creamy polenta app. and reduced valet, so that's worth it (menu changes there too). Bring back the panna cotta!

-Chef Allen's looks good, but he's had lots of pre-spice promotions too. I wonder if you can combine Spice menu with 1/2 price wines on Wednesday? Hmm...

-Capital Grille usually a good deal, but what's this: only one steak option at a steakhouse? no mashed potatoes? (still, tournedos of filet is ok)

-Michy's: I haven't been often enough to know if it represents much of a discount from regular menu.

-still waiting to see menus from Bourbon Steak and Timo (laggards!).

You can indeed combine the spice menu with 1/2 price wine at chef allens.

i heard that some of the restaurants are already offering their Spice menus. Anyone know for sure of any that are doing this. I am going to be in mid-Miami Beach this Friday and Saturday night and would love to take advantage if possible.

Miami New Times has a good breakdown of the various categories of Miami Spice restaurants and which ones are good values.

We'll be travelling in to Miami from WPB area, and don't know the Miami scene. We may not be able to get a sitter, any of these better choice places accomodating of children for a lunch sitting? DD is usually happiest in a setting with a lot of activity...
