breakfast in Durham, NC
Dear Chowhound,
I live in Durham, NC, and have had a hard time finding a really good place for breakfast. Any suggestions?

Rick's Diner serves breakfast all day, everyday. Are you looking for weekday breakfast places or weekend/brunch places?
For weekday options my order of preference would be Guglhupf, Foster's, Parker & Otis, Rick's Diner, or Saladelia Cafe.
For weekend/brunch places you will NEVER go wrong with Piedmont, Vin Rouge, Watt's Grocery, Rue Cler, Tonali, Guglhupf or Papa Mojos.
For what its worth, I went to Scratch bakery for the first time this past Saturday morning and they had some really good breakfast offerings. Not a huge variety of choices, but all high quality stuff. There were some egg dishes, but the real star was a slice of tomato pie (not pizza, a TOMATO PIE) that was out of this world. In fact, I ended up buying a whole tomato pie to take home.

I think Benetis (near Papa Mojos) does breakfast and I would imagine Scratch Bake does some form of breakfast. Rick's Diner I would believe also does breakfast. Are you looking for something special? Foster's does breakfast, but it's overpriced to me. I mean what are you looking for? I make my own breakfast and only do breakfast out on vacations or if I'm running late.

Brig's is chain restaurant food to me (heavy and gussied up) and I've consistently been disappointed with Elmo's. I've never been, but I just learned that Parker & Otis (nr. Brightleaf Sq) serves breakfast every day and I bet it's fresh and good.

Have you tried Brig's at the Park on Hwy 55? We drive from Greensboro to get breakfast there. They have interesting omelet creations--my favorite is the Ultimate Omelet with smoked turkey, cream cheese, water chestnuts, mushrooms, and broccoli--but they have more traditional ones, too. My husband goes for the skillets that combine fried potatoes, meat, cheese, and vegetables, and a fried egg. The pancakes and waffles are good, too.The menu is varied, the service is always good, and we've liked everything we've ever tried.

The best breakfast place in the Triangle is Breadman's in Chapel Hill. I think a bit better than Elmo's (Durhan/CH) but similar $$/type. They have great pancakes and omelettes. Choice of sunflower toast (biscuits are up and down). and not a breakfast item but try the chocolate cake, served warm, no icing but powdered sugar.
As to breakfast in Durham?? Watt's Grocery on broad street. Definately upscale compared to Breadmans. Amy (owner/chef) promotes local ingredients. My favorite in Durham.-----
