Vegetarian friendly restaurants

  • 7

hey - I have a chef friend and a vegetarian coming into town, so I want to take them to a fine or "deliciously Montreal" restaurant that will also have vegetarian options. Any recommendations? If I was not looking for a veggie friendly menu, I would take them to Kitchen Galerie, or Laloux , or something. Thanks!!

  1. Have you contacted Kitchen Galerie to see if they can accomodate a vegetarian?

You can also do a board search for vegetarian friendly. I understand that you are not looking for a hardcore vegetarian restaurant.

no i havent actually - i should stop by for sure, but it may be too late to get a reservation for this friday.

unfortuantely my friend does not eat fish.

if you have any other suggestions, it is very appreciated! in a jam now!

    2. If your friend eats fish, then any of those places would work. 5ieme Peche is also known for having at least one veggie-friendly option on their menu.

      1. My meat-eating friend says that the fully vegetarian Thai resto ChuChai is his favourite restaurant of any kind in all of Montreal. It may not be exactly what you're looking for, but just thought I'd throw it out there: http://www.chuchai.com/

I personally love Aux Vivres - which may qualify as "deliciously Montreal" but it's certainly not fine dining. It's vegan food that - again - many non-vegetarians (including me) adore and even crave.

        1. A few other thoughts, from one who eats almost no red meat:

I've found that many fine-dining restos in Montreal are heavily French-oriented and aside from fish/seafood usually are extremely limited in their non-meat options. Cuisines I've found vegetarian-friendly include Indian, Lebanese (and other Middle Eastern), and Italian. Would Alep or Petit Alep, a high-end Italian, or nicer Indian restaurant possibly fit the bill?

spectraversa, do call the Kitchen Galerie guys or drop by - they are market driven and may well rise to such a challenge- they are right by Jean-Talon Market, deliberately.

Chuchai is very good, kpzoo -right next door is Chuch which is a byow with basically the same food - you can do some great wine pairings with Germanic cépages (riesling, pinot blanc and gris, etc) Aux vivres is a bit too squeaky-clean for my tastes - why the hell can't you have a glass of wine or beer? (no, I certainly wouldn't go to such a place to get sloshed or sing loud sportfan songs).

French restaurant food - this time of year, I might well go chez des amis en France and no meat whatsoever except a bit of saucisson because there are too many wonderful crops to eat. You'll have to ask both your friends about what they like to eat.

By the way, although I'm by no means vegetarian, I eat far less red meat than our friends here who'd suggest APDC and Schwartz's on the same weekend! So much the better for them, but I'm also glad to see chowhounds contributing a bit less red-meat-centred vision of Motréal for those who prefer to eat otherwise!

          2. My husband is vegetarian and I am always on the look out for nice restaurants with veg options. 5e Peche is lovely and always has an option, as does Kitchenette. Kitchen Galerie will accomodate if you call first, as will Le Locale and Montee de Lait. Surprinsingly Au Pied de Cochon also has delicious a couple of vegetarian appetizers that can be paired up to make a decent meal.
