Looking for date-worthy restaurant

  • r

Hello all,
I am planning to go out for dinner this coming week and head out for drinks after at Panorama. The person I am with has never really seen Toronto so I figure I'd go there for the view..

IF possible I'd like a place that's walkable or only a couple subway stops away..
Somewhere with nice ambiance and looking to spend around $150 incl. wine.

All suggestions are appreciated :)

  1. Sounds like you'll be in the Yorkville area... I like Caren's Wine Bar (the back patio is gorgeous), L'Unita (the room is a little buzzy, but in a happy way and I think it's a good date spot), or maybe Wish (but I haven't been there since its reincarnation so you'd have to do a bit of research about the food).

I second Caren's. As Rabbit said that back patio is amazing. The food and service have always been great in my experience. Not mention the wine list is great as well.

Thanks guys, Carens looks great and the weather is supposed to be nice so that back patio will happen!
Perfect walking distance after dinner to Panorama as well.
Any suggestions with regards to food or wine?

Thirding Caren's. Great spot. They have a pretty wicked stilton burger and I love the spicy mac and cheese, which is really a penne in a cheesy, spicy cream sauce. Pancetta is optional and recommended. :)

They have a lovely brut rose, if you or your date like sparklers.

Stilton burger at Caren's is fab!

And an alternate suggestion for a patio with a view... I much prefer the Roof bar at the Hyatt to Panorama. I find the atmosphere more refined (not too stuffy) and I love the feel of hotel bars.

It seems that Caren's is the winner, but I just wanted to throw in a vote for L'Unita (nothing against Caren's, which I have yet to get to, but I think L'Unita's a great date spot).

    2. C5 at the ROM is the first place that comes to mind. Always been a good experience for me there.

      1. I think it depends on what kind of date you want! I like going to places like Guu and Cava, because you get to share lots of interesting dishes. They're happy, not pretentious and always put me in a great mood. I think that between the two, Guu's vibe is a lot more fun and vibrant. Cava has great dishes - you might spill a little over your budget with wine though. The nice thing about Cava is that you can go next door to XocoCava for some yummy ice cream, which would a perfect end to a muggy summer night. Xococava is a few stops north, at St. Clair Station while Guu (in my opinion) is walking distance (perhaps not if she is wearing heels). It's about a 20 minute walk @ Church and Gerrard)

Guu vs Cava = Japanese vs Spanish Tapas (I put a pic of each)

        Enjoy :-) http://cookiesandtomatoes.blogspot.com/

The biggest problem with Guu is the 1 - 2 hour wait, without the benefit of a bar area to order drinks in. OK with friends, but potentially problematic on a first or early date -- standing around waiting without the benefit of drinks or food as a distraction! :)

That's a good point - maybe I've been lucky but when I just go with 1 other person the wait has never been longer than 30 minutes. Short enough on a summer night to just chill outside by the lantern/enjoy pre-dinner talk but not get grumpy with hunger. I had to wait 2 hours once, but I was with a group of 8 so it was understandable. Can't wait for the new location in the Annex!

Guu sounds very interesting! I think we shall have to try this one next week :)

              yay! :-)
I have enjoyed almost all the items on their menu (but I didn't take pictures of all of them nor have I blogged about it), but if you want suggestions let us know! You'll get lots of eager replies, I'm sure. Have fun! If you're just going with one other person, I think that sitting at the bar is a fun experience (maybe a little less intimate for some but I like it!)
