SOURCES FOR GAME POULTRY AND MEAT

Aside from a farmer in your neighborhood; I am looking for alternative sources for game meats/poultry.
D'Artagnan is getting more than absurd. Example, a 3.5 lb whole rabbit is $38.00 plus overnight FedEx, which brings the total cost to near $100.00. A Blue Footed
French Chicken almost the same cost. I am interested in Guinea Hens, Rabbits, Heritage turkeys, (Bourbon Reds are my favorite), and Quail. I live in
Florida and will drive many a mile to get good products.
Thanks

I ordered a guinea fowl via a local food store from d'Artagnan, and was deeply disappointed to get a tender tiny pintadeau instead of a fine mature (and braiseable) pintade. And it was $20 plus shipping, fifteen years ago!

Turkeys are not so hard to find, and living in a place with live-poultry houses that carry ducks and rabbits (LA County) I don't have to depend on the fancy-food suppliers for those. But DAMN I'd love me a good grownup guinea...

Wow, the first house we bought in Oregon in 1992 came with a flock ofthe most stupid animals I've ever seen. Oh, right, guineas :) Never killed one tho' they begged for it by standing in the middle of the drive and screaming at us :)

The ones the family cook in France prepared for us were large enough to feed two people each and have leftovers. We had them for dinner one night, and the next day cold for lunch with salads of potato, tomatoes and dressed greens. A cousin's son, wife and their child had shown up mid-morning, and by lunchtime even his grandmother was ready to take the kid out and drown him. Lunch was promising to be even more nerve-wracking until Margo brought out the platter of pintade, whereupon the child suddenly sat down in his chair and became very polite, at least until he'd had his share. I didn't like him any better for it, but I figured it showed promise...

You may want to check out Polarica in SF. I've read good things about them.

            BBQBOY,

Thanks for the links; I know a few of the Florida farms. Funny story on "Bourbon Red" Turkeys. There was an article in the paper last summer, (August), about a fellow who raises Reds. I called to reeserve one for Thanksgiving, he asked "What year?". Sold out for 2009!!
