Back Bay/Near Fenway on crutches

foodinspace Jul 14, 2010 11:24 AM

Hello all,

I'll be in Boston on Saturday night. While I'm fairly flexible, I'll be meeting a friend who is on crutches and is a vegetarian. I will be staying at the hostel on Hemenway St. Given the crutches situation, I don't think we'll be able to wander very far...and I'd prefer not to have to take the T. As you can probably tell from my choice of accommodation, I'm looking for budget options, mains less than $15 work well. I like almost anything...just not sandwiches. It seems there is good Chinese to be had but perhaps Chinatown is too far a walk? I'll always take a good pizza. The Moby Dick Kebab place recommended here also looks like a possible option but is it the kind of place where one can relax with a beer?

I would also like to hear about good local bars with a great beer list. I'd be happy eating in a bar too, if their food is halfway decent (and they have vegetarian options.). Finally, a good Sunday brunch nearby? (I'll be alone so dim sum won't work..again < $15). Thanks!!!

Thanks all for the suggestions! My friend and I ended up at Island Hopper. It fit the bill, though it was nothing too special. Decent price, decent food, decent atmosphere. I thought the portions were a bit small but no big deal. I hope I can return and explore Boston further. Thanks again!

Pho Basi!! REALLY awesome vegetarian options, close to where you're going, reasonably priced, and great service. Big thumbs up from me.

Jumping up and down and waving both hands for Pho Basil. Newly adopted place that seems to have soared to a point near the top of the family & friends favorites list.

Where is your friend coming from? Wouldn't it make more sense to meet closer to the person on crutches?

Woody's Grill and Tap is close by for you, inexpensive and I hear the pizza is good. Moby Dick doesn;t serve beer and is more of a take out place with a few tables. On Mass Ave near you are Bhindi Bazaar and Island Hopper for Indian and Pan Asian respectively. Not best of show but OK, close by and not expensive.

I haven't been there for a while, but I had very good pizza at Woody's.

How about La Verdad on Landsdowne? Good beers, guac, grilled corn and chile rellenos for the veggie, and reasonable prices for you. I think the Sox game's an afternoon game, so you should be ok for the night.

Sox are at night on Saturday, so I'd avoid Landsdowne. Especially on crutches

The Other Side Cafe should be a one stop shop for what you are looking for and it is only a couple of blocks away at Mass Ave and Newbury St. Extension.
