I tried one out in CA and it wasn't anything special. There were about 4 within 60 miles of my former home. Drove past the one in Wappinger Falls, and it was packed. Has to be the gimmick with the car hop, though I hear there is a great car hop joint...very legit...in Bethel which I can not wait to try.

I really can't stand these manufactured promotions that pry on people who get sucked into these typoes of openings...alot of Americans will buy almost anything...which is why we have time shares, credit card offers, and the lottery.

SONIC is nothing...it is the exacty same formula as all the others...save yourself the time and waste of effort. Wasted calories...go to a local restaurant and stoip acting like lemmings...

The only QSR I felt has been different is IN'n'Out...all out on the left coast. They keep it simple and clean...five guys is similar...but they both focus on only doing a few things well...

That's the Sycamore Drive in. It's good enough that I drove there from West Hartford for lunch one day. Yummy burgers, homemade root beer...enjoy! I know I posted something about it when I went but I cannot find it (from probably 2 summers ago).

And Dr. Mikes is down the street for great ice cream.

Now those places are Chowhound worthy.

Sonic can't be anything quite as good as In and Out Burger, right??
            Never had Sonic.

I had my first I&O a few weeks ago and if that is the upper limit, count me out. It just was not the nirvana people have mentioned.

sonic is not nearly as good as In and Out. It still reigns supreme in my book.

I've never gotten whatt In and Out is all about, either. to my buds, only a step up from Burger King.

But then I wasn't weened on them like those on the left coast. LW1 -- did you grownup out there?

Now the special place in my heart is for Big Boy, which sustained me through high school and college. And when I hit LA, I do a pilgrimage to the one in Burbank.

I lived in SF for about 5yrs, but i grew up in Maryland and have been in CT for about 7 years. I think everyone has their soft spot for a particular indulgence. In&Out is mine, but it could be more nostalgia than anything.
Bob's Big Boy certainly brings back memories, don't remember the food, but certainly hanging out there when i had just gotten my drivers license.

I don't get it.........people really want more burgers and friggin't tater tots? I wouldn't wait 4 seconds for that.........I do like the car hop thing, but seriously mixing fruity sodas and normal fast food........I really don't get it.

it's not that people want more burgers and tator tots.... i don't think that is the point. CT in general gets the worst of the fast food places. Sonic has a huge following in the south and advertises all over ESPN so we see their commercials. for me, i just wanted to see what it was about. they also have a menu that is slightly different and more interesting than Wendy's. am i going to make it a weekly visit? no way. will i stop there if im driving nearby for a quick bite? maybe.

"Sonic has a huge following in the south and advertises all over ESPN "

I think this just about sums it up for me.........if that is the demographic, I guess I'm not going to get it. The South's fast food eating habits shouldn't be something we strive for and ESPN jumped the shark over 15 years ago when they became a cartoonish network of Entertainment not Sports.

If you happen to be driving through Kayenta or Page or Tuba City in the middle of the summer, and you are hot hot hot, as you will be in the middle of the desert, it is very comforting to pull into a Sonic and to have that roof over your head and to order a large limeade. It's just a lime-flavored soda, but they throw half a real lime into the cup and it is very comforting to see it and to smell the oils of the rind. Cuz there is NOTHING else, for miles and miles and miles. And even the most devoted chowhound can only put away so many Navajo Tacos and so much mutton stew.

If the crowd is anything like it was when they opened their first location in Bergen County, NJ, you're best bet will to be waiting a few months.
