don't know if sushi sam's takes reservations. probably not busy at 5. hotaru at 33 e. 3rd ave.
is a cheaper and better choice. problem is everyone (but you) know about it.

I do know about hotaru, and I do go there alot. I am taking a friend from out of town, so want to go to a better place.

I'm a regular at Sushi Sam's. You'll walk right in at 5pm, no problem, though I wonder if they don't open until 5:30? Either way, you'll be seated immediately. And if you sit at the bar (assuming you are only ordering sushi and possibly appetizers), your meal will be very quick. The crazy crowds start at about 6, and by 7, you're looking at a 45 minute wait on a friday night.

Sushi Sam's has much, much better sushi than Hotaru. I like Hotaru for nonsushi, but they aren't even in the same league when it comes to sushi.

They don't take reservations and I'm pretty sure they open at 5:30. They are quick at that hour, however.

Hush my mouth - the website says 5. For all of us pretty certain the hour was 5:30, you should be assured a quick seat.
