I'm visiting from NYC next week and want to visit at least one farmer's market. Any suggestions as to which one is best, or are they all pretty much the same? I'm staying in Venice. And I don't think I want to go to the giant farmers market with the clock tower - unless someone recommends it highly - it seems a little touristy to me. Thanks.

Oh, if anyone has ideas for family friendly restaurants (just one 18 month old daughter) with great food, please send those along as well.

The Santa Monica farmers market on Wednesdays would probably be the best. Santa Monica is right next to Venice and this market is highly regarded. I think by the clocktower you mean the Farmers Market, a tourist, um, site. It has nothing remarkable produce-wise but lots of good food and cheap souvenirs. Going there is a totally different experience from going to a farmers market.

Check out the South Pasadena Farmers Market on Thursday nites at the corner of Mission & Meridian. Great produce of all classification including a large selection of organic produce. They have fresh squeezed juices, flowers and an array of vendors selling fresh prepared foods. Santa Maria tri-tip, gourmet tamales, woodfired sausages, pupusas, garlic fries, shaved ice and hand shaken, fresh squeezed lemonade are some of the offerings. It's a Farmers Market that is true to its roots. It's not a swap meet/flea market like they have in Monrovia. This is a first class market. The Gold Line will drop you off at the start of the market. Well worth the visit.

It sort of depends on which day of the week you have available. On weekends, I think the Hollywood Farmers' Market is the best. It takes place on Sunday mornings, on Ivar, between Sunset and Hollywood Boulevards (right near the Cinerama Dome theater). During the week, I agree with Juris Dog; the Wednesday market in Santa Monica is the best I've visited.

And, you are correct; the "Farmer's Market" on Fairfax, adjacent to the Orlandoesque Grove shopping center, is a farmers' market in name only.

I agree with others re: Santa Monica on Wednesday. You're not likely to do any better and it's near where you're staying.I do like the Tuesday afternoon one on Main St in Culver City, though it isn't nearly as large.
