Is Mesa Grill really going downhill??

We've got a reservation at Mesa Grill for Saturday night, but, from what I'm reading, perhaps we'd better rethink our decision. Does ANYONE out there still like Mesa Grill, or should we venture elsewhere? Are there any really good places that serve the same style of food? Anywhere in Manhattan is fine.

  1. Venture elsewhere. Try Los Feliz or Yerba Buena instead. Smaller and louder but better food

    1. I've been there many times for both dinner and brunch, and I think it's very good. The decor might need a face lift though.

I agree that brunch at MG is solid. Great bread basket, to boot.

As grouchomarx says Mesa Grill is the same as it ever was and it's something I've decided I don't really enjoy. Maybe 15 years ago it was very innovative for Flay to throw a dozen spices on a piece of protein and then add some honey and maybe even fruit(Oh, that Bobby Flay is a clever boy.) But I find that style of cooking played out. It covers the flavor of anything you eat so that ot wouldn't really matter if it was on a scallop or a piece of chicken. But if it's something you really want to try you should go for it. I totally agree that the decor is looking a little ragged. It hasn't been renovated for ages.

        2. I was there a few months ago and thought it was fine. I had the shrimp tamale, blue corn pancake with duck, lamb chops and chile relleno. Everything was well prepared and tasty. It was my first time there so I can't say whether or not it has gone downhill. I know a lot of hounds seem to think it's passe, but as it was my first time and don't eat that style of food often, it was relatively new to me.
