Birthday Restaurant!

Hi there,

I'm looking for a restaurant to take my parents to for my birthday thursday night - we're definitely looking to splurge a little for a memorable meal with fine flavour and good service. While my parents are not big fans of Middle Eastern cuisine, essentially everything else is fair game! For 3 people, we'd like to stay around 200 with no microscopic portions...we have huge appetites and would love to be full by the end of the night. So far perusing the board has given way to Chiado and Nota Bene. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Does the $200 include alcohol, tax and tip?

We probably won't be drinking, if that answers any questions! Tax and tip can be on top of the 200 as well.

Great! Chiado is a good choice -- it has a bit of an old world feel and the service is excellent. Your parents would probably enjoy it a lot. Nota Bene is another nice place, but the atmosphere is a bit corporate and not nearly as intimate. And while the portions are not microscopic, they are definitely more on the "fine dining" side of size. But there are lots of share plates you can order to round out a meal (onion strings, frites, veggies, etc.). I've never left there hungry.

At your price point, there are lots of options. So if you have any specific requests, you should outline them. Otherwise, all of the other "special occasion" threads on the board will give you good guidance. I'd say the only "usual suspects" places that are probably over your price point are Splendido, George, Canoe and Scaramouche. Mind you, that's assuming each person ordering an app, a main and a dessert.

I recently took my parents to C5 at the ROM (http://www.c5restaurant.ca) for their anniversary, and we had a great time. It was my second time there, and the food had improved considerably (not that it was bad the first time), and my parents especially enjoyed being "inside the crystal" and looking out at the hustle and bustle of the street. The environment is a bit sterile, but if you don't mind that element, I would definitely recommend looking into this place.
