Day trip to wine country
First time poster, long time reader! My husband and I live in MN and are meeting my friend of 42 years and her husband from AZ for the girl's joint 60th birthday weekend celebration in SFO (Fri night til Mon morning). We will be staying at the Ritz. Restaurants we are considering are; Boulevard, Townhall, Bruce, Epic, Quince, Tiburon, or Aqua. I noticed that Zuni was mentioned several times in other posts. I would really appreciate opinions about the above mentioned restaurants or other favorite suggestions. Also, we would like to do a day trip to Napa or Sonoma. Which is closer, and would you recommend getting a driver or renting a car? My husband isn't really a wine drinker so he could drive. So - if you were doing just a day trip to experience "wine country," which vineyard (1 or 2?) would you choose and where would be a good place for lunch? How about shopping (art, antiques, quaint shops, etc?). Looking forward to your suggestions, and thanks for all the great info you all post on the boards!
I'd also say Sonoma, but in the Healdsburg area. It also has a plaza with shops and tasting rooms. You can do a loop up to Lytton Springs road and then Dry Creek Road, then meander down the Westside Road through the Russian River Valley on the way back to San Francisco. Recommended wineries include Ridge, Nalle, Unti, Rochioli and Gary Farrell.
Best first step is to read the reviews & comments on the restaurants as they are well covered on this board. Here are links to make it easier. FYI, Aqua is closed. I'm not sure what restaurants you mean by "Bruce" and "Tiburon".

re: Shane Greenwood
Thanks for the info on Aqua and the links to the other restaurants. Sorry, not sure about Bruce or Tiburon, got these names from my friend. My main concern is about the day trip to wine country and could use any useful suggestions for which day would be best and where to go (we will be in SFO from THUR night thru Mon morning, so we could go Fri, Sat, or Sun.
I recommend Sonoma for a trip like that. The town square has several good options for food and many shops. There are quite a few wineries within minutes. Look for Girl & the Fig, cafe la haye, Swiss hotel, basque bakery. There are others too, try a Sonoma search on here to find more.
re: Shane Greenwood
Great - we will go to Sonoma, lunch at Girl & the Fig, and hit 2 or 3 wineries for a perfect day. My friend told me she was referring to a Mexican restaurant in Tiburon, and the other restaurant she mentioned was Spruce, not Bruce (oops). Thanks for your suggestion to go to Sonoma and Girl & the Fig, it makes our planning much easier!
