Rehearsal dinner ideas in Richmond, VA?

Hi there!

I'm stuck! My husband and I are trying to plan a rehearsal dinner for my sister. We're foodies, she and the rest of the family are not. In fact, my sister specifically requested we stay away from "that fancy weird food that you like."

We'll have about 25 adults and 4 kids (ages 2-10). Since the wedding itself will have a backyard feel and serve barbecue, we want to keep a very casual feel with the rehearsal dinner. We'll be in the east end of Henrico County for the rehearsal, and my family lives in Mechanicsville, so bonus points if we can stay on that end of the city. We can venture to other parts of the city, though my mother has a strange aversion to anything south of the river.

So far I've found this an impossible puzzle to solve: where can we have a private room for 30 people that my sister will find acceptable?? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks for any ideas you can toss my way!

  1. On a side note for anyone else looking to plan an event, my husband and I were recently married and had a lovely rehearsal dinner at Julep's. The owner worked with my mother in law (answering all 1000 of her questions!) to have hors d'oeuvres ready as guests arrived and we had a lovely cocktail half-hour before dinner service started. The service and food were both fabulous. I highly recommend Julep's - for a private event or for a lovely dinner!

    1. That is a tough one indeed! I don't know much about Riverbound Cafe, but know it is a casual seafood restaurant in Mechanicsville area. Also, what about a Mexican place? I bet there's somewhere in the area with good Mexican food that would please you guys as foodies and people who just want tacos. I have also heard good things about Lucille's Southern Cuisine, which is out that way. Don't know that it has a private room, but with somewhere like that you might just be able to rent the place for the night. That's about all I've got. Good luck!

      1. A friend of mine recently had a rehersal dinner at The Boathouse at Rockett's Landing. That'll keep mom happy since it's north of the river and is east end-ish.

Depending on time of year and the food may be too weird but Havana 59 did a great job for our daughter's white coat ceremony celebration. We had the entire rooftop bar and it was great fun. They did a lot of appetizers and it worked out great.

I didn't know that!!! My daughter is fourth year dental student! You learn something new every day :-)

              And it was a blast!

I'll have to keep that in mind about the rooftop at Havana. And I'll definitely let my wife know as she also teaches med AND dental students (but mostly grad students) at VCU. : )

          2. Lucille's Southern Cuisine.....in Mechanicsville on North Laburnum Avenue....

They have a Banquet Hall on site for Receptions etc....

Lucille does all of my husband's company lunches...she just came out and did Fried Chicken, Green Beans, Macaroni and Cheese and Cornbread for the staff. When my husband and I got married last year, she made 2 huge trays of Lasagna for our rehearsal dinner. It was the best Lasgana I have ever had!!!

Lucille's looks like it might be a good option! It's definitely in the right part of town, and it's more my family's speed than Havana '59 or The Boathouse. I'm also looking into Roma's at Williamsburg Rd. and Nine Mile Rd.

On a side note - I really enjoy Riverbound Cafe! If you're ever out in Mechanicsville, it's one of your best dining options. If they had a banquet room, you can bet that's where this rehearsal dinner would be!

I have never been there but a friend of mine says that Lucille's has great crab cakes.

When you go to Lucille's, tell them Joel and Christy Norton sent you....they will know my husbands name...trust me....if you need anything else, just let me know....:)

The Boathouse is way over priced for sub-standard eats....we live 3 miles from there and we go for drinks only...
