Shipping wine from France to US

I have searched the boards but have not been able to find anything too recent -- can I ship wine from France to my home address in the US? If not, what is the best way to get it home? I want to bring a few cases home and I'm willing to pay extra baggage fees if that's the best way to go about it. Thanks in advance for any advice!

  1. You can NOT use the US Mail to ship any kind of alcoholic beverage. (The French postal service doesn't care.)

You can NOT fly with wine in your carry-on, only as checked baggage. Some airlines are more permissive; others more restrictive. Check before you go.

Depending upon where you are re-entering the country, you may have to pay duty and/or excise taxes. Some states have laws that will supersede Federal law (for example, Arizona allows you to fly in with only 1.0 liter of alcohol per adult, even though Federal law is more permissive.)

Depending upon how much wine, in terms of volume, and how much wine, in terms of value, you are planning on bringing home, you may want it shipped either via air freight or temperature-controlled ocean container.
