Red Hat on the River in Irvington worth trying?

grouchomarx Jul 12, 2010 12:25 PM

I can never book a table at this place, and I want to know why. Is it that great? Or do they only have a small number of tables inside? Or is it that they don't put them all on Opentable? I went there for a cocktail and it was pleasant enough, but I can never, ever seem to book this for a Friday or Saturday night.

I agree. Nice atmosphere and the food is good but not anything exceptional. Worth a try but not a trip.

I agree with the above posters and also think it's very overpriced for what it is. Drinks are NYC prices, ridiculous for Westchester. You're basically subsidizing the view.

I know you cannot reserve the outdoor tables- they are first come first serve. I am surprised to hear about the reservations- have you tried calling them directly or only Open Table? We have never once been told no, once or twice we have waited about 10 mins. Usually during the week we don't even call ahead.
Although this place is not my favorite ( I prefer the view to the food) my husband really likes it. He thinks you get a nice size portion for the $$. I have found that all the ingredients listed in a dish do not always appear on my plate.
Also inside can get very loud....

I went for Restaurant Week this past spring and enjoyed it. I probably won't return except for drinks as it's rather pricey regularly and not really my favorite kind of food. Our RW experience was very good, though. Maybe if you find out how far in advance they open reservations up you can pounce then. I imagine it's extra popular in the summer because of the gorgeous view.

If you are trying to reserve on open table or something similar don't bother, call them directly. I had a conversation with the owner about electronic reservations and he says he hates them and only lists times like 5:30 and 9:30 on it. Usually they keep a few tables open for walk in anyway.

That explains it then, because I've only tried through Opentable. Thanks for the tip. However, I generally only like using Opentable so who knows if I'll ever try this place now!

For a great seat practically IN the Hudson, (And they are on opentable) go for Half Moon a couple of miles south in Dobbs Ferry. Beautiful environment, decent food, reasonable prices.

Have you been there recently? I love the location of half moon and they have good drinks but the last time I was there (last summer or fall) the food wasn't so good. It had been much better the first times I was there. If they've improved the food that's great.

The view definitely surpasses the food, but I've been twice and the food is not terrible. I wouldn't elect to go back (except for drinks outside) unless someone else was treating...

Actually, at Half Moon the angry calamari salad, the India pale ale mussels, and the seafood bruschetta that I had last visit were all excellent and creative. Burgers are decent. It's a nice place. GREAT view, decent food, variable service, really reasonable prices. I'll definitely be back.

I have been there and I thought it was very nice. A few too many kids for my taste but that was my only complaint. Food and service were great, as is the view.

i'm sorry, but the food at half moon is terrible. went there about a month ago and everything was borderline inedible. ordered the steak medium rare and it came out well done. asked them to try agin. it came out seared and raw (not rare) in the middle. asked them to try again and it came out well done. i gave up. everything else was crap. hate to say it, but even the chart house was better when it was there.

No need to be sorry. we just have had different experiences there. I've had 5 good meals there. Consensus is that the food's quite decent, service variable. That's what makes horse races.

I have been there a few times. Great atmosphere, but the prices don't seem worth it to me. Except if you go there for the Steak Frites. If thats what you plan to order, and what they are known for, I would make the trip. Drinks are up there, and some dishes miss the mark.

The view and setting are truly gorgeous.

The food and drinks are quite expensive. The food is just good, and in my book, if you're paying those kinds of prices, the food had better be approaching great.

Clearly you are paying for the atmosphere and environment, not amazing food by any means.

That's why I love Half Moon. Just one town South, right on the river, and prices about 1/3 lower than RH.

Was at Red Hat this weekend. I think food is very good. Much better than when it first opened or than the food in the original location. Without a doubt, it has the nicest outdoor dining in Westchester and nothing beats the rooftop bar for a drink!

I didn't know there's a rooftop bar! Next time I will check it out. The inside bar gets really crowded on weekends and people linger there forever. Is the rooftop also very crowded?

Yes the rooftop is very crowded as well.
