need recommendations for New Orleans that are not creole

Hi all,

Will be in NOLA shortly and I hate to say it but I am not a fan of most creole foods, and am
not a shellfish consumer. I am looking for other alternatives, I have heard of Squeal, any other ideas?

thanks,
Laurel

I am sort of assuming that by "creole" you mean most traditional New Orleans-style dishes - i.e. gumbo, etouffee, blackened anything, etc. Under that assumption, I think you'll find that there are many, many non-creole/typical New Orleans restaurants here. Great steak can be had at Mr. Johns and La Boca, great Italian food at Irene's, Tommy's, Eleven 79. Many of the bistros - Coquette, Patois, Herbsaint, Lilette, La Petit, Bistro Daisy - serve great food that isn't creole. MiLa and Iris come to mind as nice restaurants that serve more "new-American" cuisine.

As for Squeal, I will say that I was not at all impressed when I went. The barbeque at the Joint in the Bywater is much better, IMO.

Are you looking for more casual vs. upscale places? Any specific types of food other than barbeque?

Thanks for the ideas, casual and upscale are what I will try. I am not into heavy sauces, crayfish, or lots of fried food. Other than that, I enjoy everything else!

If these are your limitations, you'll be fine just about anywhere.
