Pickling Cukes in bulk

mtchbx Jul 12, 2010 05:03 AM

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck buying in bulk at the chelsea produce center. I realize that most of the dealers are wholesale only but thought maybe if I showed up with cash they might sell me some cucumbers at a lower price than the supermarket. Maybe?

For sure they will as long as you buy entire boxes. Cash and carry of course.

Thank you, now I just have to find the cucumbers somewhere in the produce center. Any idea what a whole box would cost, or how many pounds it is?

Cucumbers are sold by the crate, roughly 55lbs which are going for under $40 in the Boston produce reports. Cash and Carry for produce is easier to accept for produce wholesalers instead of other purveyors, but that doesn't mean that all will sell to you, nor do you specifically need to go to Everett/Chelsea (where its easier to cash and carry from vendors outside of the NEPC). And if you don't need 55 lbs, you would be better off trying to negotiate a bulk discount from a medium sized produce store (Rosebud/Malden, Roberto's/Medford, New Deal Fruit/Revere... come to mind, Russo's may offer some discount in bulk...), vendors at farmers markets, or perhaps even a co-op. You can also get them at Haymarket inexpensively, but in addition to using them soon you should inspect them well before buying.
