My Time In Newport ( where I ate for 48 hours)

  • 1

Okay, I've noticed a ton of posts where people ask where they should eat for lunch or dinner or some place affordable. I go to Newport every Summer for a couple of nights with my family and can help you... Now mind you every Summer we go we try to hit favorite haunts and also attempt new places usually due to my visiting this site and seeing what people are talking about or simply stumbling upon a new joint...

We broke tradition and had our first lunch upon our arrival at the BARKING CRAB located near the Brick Alley Pub. Usually our first lunch is at the Black Pearl, but due to having small kids and the seating being close we opted to go to another place because last time we went the tables were about a foot apart ( love the food, menu and atmosphere of Black Pearl though). The Barking Crab was pretty good. It worked out well and was affordable and had an okay menu for kids. We really enjoyed the lobster & crab dip appetizer.

We ate dinner at the RED PARROT. The Red Parrot is a staple for my family even before we had kids. Big menu and usually okay food. I ate the Greek Pizza which I've never tried before and liked it. My wife had a steak salad and the portion was huge!

Our first morning we ate at Gary's Lunch Pale which is further up Thames. Another staple. It's a 50's looking place and the food is cheap and good. Seems like a solid local breakfast place.

Lunch our second day was at CLUB H2O. I had a kobe burger. My wife had fish and chips and said it was delicious. Nice view of harbor. Nice kid menu to. Not to pricey but not inexpensive either.

Our dinner that night was SALAS on Thames. We've never eaten there before. We wanted to eat at a couple of other places both notable to us and notable to the site but the kids were tired and we had to stay close to the hotel. Salas was affordable but the weakest of all the places we ate at and not likely to be a stop again although it was by no means bad. I had lobster ravioli and it was average.

In the morning, our last morning, we had muffins and coffee from the Coffee Grinder which was located near Black Dog shops by Cooke House. Good coffee.

In the meantime, between eating ( we don't eat out alot where we live so we enjoy the prospects of Newport... We did a sunset cruise. Not entirely worth it in my opinion especially with young kids. Our attention span is not used to sitting back by the Newport bridge waiting for sunset. In the past we've done other cruises. This one seemed the longest, but people were having a good time and probably felt different about it.

We went to 2 mansions - Breakers and Rosecliff ( I liked Rosecliff the best) and did the cliffwalk. A must see.

We went twice to Gooseberry beach and enjoyed the view and it was not crowded, however, it is a cove and the water isn't the best. Newport seems to have issues with red tide.

My definition of Newport is ever changing from going there as a single guy to going with my girlfriend, then wife, then now as a family man. There's plenty for everyone to enjoy but where we eat has drastically changed as my children are strictly mac & cheese, hotdogs and fries, pizza kind of kids. We also no longer belly up to the bars having wonderful drinks. Club H2O was the kind of place with an incredible drink menu and maybe when we had no kids we would have had a incredible martini at 1PM during our vacation, but now we don't. Even my critique of Salas would have been different if I was pounding back Newport Storm beer like I would have years ago.

Hope this helps.

  1. Just to clarify, what you saw at the beach was not red tide, just red algae that are normal and harmless, just a bit annoying when you want to swim in clear water.

Oh, thanks for the tip on Gary's Handy Lunch. I'll try to remember to try their breakfast after Labor Day.
