Mad Men themed cocktail party

Ashley12 Jul 9, 2010 08:40 PM

So one of my friends is having a Mad Men themed cocktail party for her birthday. I love to cook and want to bring a yummy appetizer to share but I am at a loss of what was popular in the 1960s. I want to bring something better than chips and onion dip or mini franks. Any suggestions??

I know there is at least one thread about Mad men themed party food around here, did you try doing a search?

    Sounds fun, goodluck!

Here are two other threads about Mad Men party ideas:

I would think anything featured in Betty Draper's cookbook would be a good idea. In season 2 we get a view of one of her cookbooks and it is The Betty Crocker Hostess Cookbook. (Which actually didn't get published until 1967 so it's sort of anachronistic, but Mad Men is such a great show I'll forgive that.) When I was researching this particular cookbook I ran into a blog post that mentioned rumaki in relation to Mad Men: http://www.eatmedaily.com/2009/08/ret...

Mini meatballs were a popular appetizer -- either Swedish style or in a tomato based sauce.

I haven't peeked at the two threads provided by Laura, but molded aspics were popular. They can be made savory, rather than sweet, which would be far better for a cocktail party. I poked around the internet for a minute, and the use of pate in a molded aspic came up a few times.

            Have fun!
