romantic with a view
friends coming to NYC in late September. Have been to River Cafe, seeking a romantic restaurant with a view. Cost no object, but not Per Se.

The NY's will rise out of their chairs but I love The Water Club and there's not a finer view in Manhattan. I also agree with you about The River Cafe. Believe me. I have been to both of them at least a dozen times.
The Water Club @ The East River at 30th St., New York, NY 212 - 683 - 3333.

Haven't tried it, but I often pass this restaurant on walks around town. So I'm curious: What did you enjoy eating at the Water Club, and what was exceptional about it other than the view?

I live near the Mississippi River and nothing is more beautiful than dining on water to me. We visit the Gulf Coast several times a year also. Dining on the coast is just outstanding. Dining in NYC is wonderful but there are no water views. I would say the view is about 50% of what I like about The Water Club but I like the building, the bar is beautiful, the main dining room overlooking the E River is long and gorgeous. The atmosphere is superb.
My wife could be a chef. She has studied and gone to cooking classes for 20 years so I get grand food at home. When I go out I usually order fresh fish, lamb, veal or a steak. My wife can cook all above a lot better at home than I could buy in a restaurant. What I ate at The Water Club was probably fresh fish, pasta, lamb or veal. I have never documented a single meal I ever had in my life and I certanly could not tell you what food I enjoyed at The Water Club but the view, room, service and atmosphere makes up for 75% or more to me. And the service is also superb. It's as good as any restaurant I have ever been in NYC. The food comes in second to the above to me. We get outstanding southern food in the Mississippi Delta such as BBQ, steaks, Italian, country food, etc. We are fortunate to get excellent food at home or in surrounding restaurants in the South. I live near New Orleans and I would rank their dining in the top 5/6 cities in the U. S. But NYC dining is outstanding and we look forward to coming back soon.

Just had dinner at Porterhouse in the TWC. Get a table by the window and look out at CP. Good food , good service, romantic view, quiet.

Two others you may want to check out would be: Asiate (www.mandarinoriental.com) where t.he $24 weekday luncheon is an awfully good deal and the views of Central Park are first rate; Terrace in the Sky (www.terraceinthesky.com) wih 360 degree views from Moringside Heights. One more, that, strictly speaking, may well not match your request would be the New Leaf Cafe (www.nyrp.org) up in Ft. Tryon Park; nuthin' quite like it.
