Tenampa Mexican in Toms River very disappointing..

Tapas52 Jul 8, 2010 06:00 PM

Tonight wanting to stay local we tried Tenampa Mexican Restaurant on Rt 9 in
Toms River...big mistake! Although a nicely decorated place inside the food was less then desirable and anything but authentic Mexican cuisine. We ordered the Combo Chicken Burrito & Taco...the wife the Pork Burrito. Drenched in a red tomato sauce that honestly tasted like Prego in a jar completely obliterating any flavors of the burrito. The Beef Taco sadly enough was placed on top of all the red sauce and when I tried to pick it up it was soaked disintegrated and broke apart all over my plate. I asked for Lime and the had none.... The plain Pork Burrito was tasteless and needed salt & pepper excessively...we asked for a little Salsa Verde to try to create some sort of flavor and that was like water plus they had the nerve to charge an extra $2.00 for a small maybe 2 ounces of it!!..
All I can say is I would never recomend this place and as far as the sign out front touting "AUTHENTIC" Mexican Food, Tenampa is FAR away from that

Thanks

We were extremely dissapointed in the Tenampa in Manahawkin also.
I Think this was their first restaurant.Lots of Locals say it is very good, But My wife and seem to disagree.
One night for Take out. Extremely poor food. Freshness and Quality both lacking.
I came down with some Montezuma's Revenge later that evening..
      Will never go Back

If you are ever in the Manahawkin area, 2 really good authentic Mexican places are:

El Jose Mexican Restaurant (in the Getty gas station) 980 East Bay Avenue
Manahawkin, NJ 08050 (609) 597-5099 - take out (only 2 seats in the place). Excellent homemade food!!! Owners are very funny and friendly! Very reasonable prices!!! Also great Mexican groceries!

El Senor Frog on 31 N Main St. Manahawkin (eat in) - phone #609-978-9000. Just had the enchiladas and they were very good and spicy!!! Cash only place - very reasonable prices! Homemade, authentic mexican!

The above 2 places run circles around Tenampa!!!! Happy chowing!

Actually, there are plenty of places just off exit 109. But for Mexican, you'll need to go into Red Bank. The obvious choices there are Juanitos and North of the Border. There are a number of threads on this board about each of them.

Thanks for the recommendations! A new Mexican opened in town here in Manahawkin that is awesome. Closer is better, but always good to know places others like.

                    El Oaxaqueno Cubanas sandwich are
"MEXICAN Style"....which are a bit different then the traditional grilled version most are used to as they are made on a hugh round seeded roll....they have a great authentic menu and there lies the goodness of real Mexican Cuisine....enjoy

Usually a Mexican style "Cubana" torta consists of a thin (sometimes breaded) pork filet and grilled hot dogs sliced lengthwise. WIth queso oaxaca, mayo, avocado, and jalapeno. No ham, mustard or pickles like a Cuban sandwich. May vary, but definitely a different animal than a Cuban sandwich.

Now I want one for lunch. There's a little deli in Lambertville (Tacos Cancun) that makes a splendid one as described above. Sorry to be O/T... that's nowhere near Toms River (but where I am).

I was also disapointed in in El Tenampa. There were so many amazing reviews on Yelp that we decided to give it a try. Blech. I agree... the sauce that smothered my burrito DID indeed taste like jarred spaghetti sauce. The burrito itself was decent, but it was hard to taste it with all that sauce. The only thing I DID like was the salsa. That was really good. I rather stick to Juanito's in Howell. It's much better and closer to boot.
