Deep Dish Pizza in LA?

Anybody know of a good deep dish pizza in Los Angeles? Similar styles would be like Zachary's in Berkely or Gino's East in Chicago?

  1. I've heard some Chicago transplants claim that Tony's Pizza in Placentia is the real deal, or at least pretty darn close to it.

I've had it, and it was love at first bite. Get the stuffed pizza--I think it's delicious and unlike any other pizza I've had on the west coast. I get a large stuffed and it feeds 4-6 people--the pizza is just ridiculously heavy. I've never had their thin crust, so I can't vouch for that.

This is no chain/fast food pizza place, so phone in your order ahead. It usually takes 45-50 mins for them to bake it.

You'll find some additional recs in this post:

The Best thin crust (Chicago Style) Pizza In Southern California is Biaggios located in Lake Forest on Muirlands Ave. They do not have a web site, they are a mom and pop place-old school. They have a dining room and a good meat sauce. The eggplant and Lasagna is pretty good. The italian beef is cut to thick and the beef juice is mild. You have to order your Pizza extra thin and well done to get the full Chicago effect. They have a great sauce it is close to Rosaties the crust is awesome. They are from Berwyn near Chicago. I have not found a good Deep dish place yet- BJ's sucks. There are 2 Ono's in San Diego and one in San Fran. Still not my favorite, so I always order Lou Malnatie's online.

Chicago's best in Irvine has a great beef and viena beef hot dog. Of course Portillos ( I grew up with the familly in Addison) is the best I wish Dick would make some pizza.

    2. In case you haven't seen these yet, here are a couple of recentish postings about finding Chicago Style Pizza in

      1. Have you been to Zelo in Arcadia? A lot of their pizzas are more California than Chicago (potato rosemary and whatnot) but their sausage pizza is delicious and captures the spirit of Gino's, only with less sauce. The crust is cornmeal-based, the sausage is homemade, and it comes with marinated peppers (not negotiable - they take a rather French approach to substitutions). Other selling points are the perfectly-dressed salads, the amazing (judging from the smell) roast chicken, the reasonable prices, and the charming staff. It's really a treasure, and a nice place to while away a lazy afternoon with a Moretti.

One tip: don't make the mistake of going for the pepperoni instead unless you're sure that's what you want - it has fresh tomatoes and no sauce.

        1. I recently had a decent deep dish @ Masa Bakery on Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park - caveat emptor: takes an hour from when you order it!

          1. For good Chicago deep-dish, you have to go to Chicago. Sorry.

That being the case, there seems to have been a consensus about Banducci's in Arcadia, although I've never been:

My local favorites are Giorgio's in Studio City and Prizzi's in Hollywood, with some qualifications about service and parking for the latter.

Max, I think when you wrote that "there seems to have been a concensus about Banducci's in Arcadia" you meant Zelo's, (since you point out that Banducci's is in Lakewood).

Well, that's another Chicago pizza joint for me to try. Thanks for the correction.

As good as any I have had in Chicago...a must stop on the way to and from Palm Springs and the outlets in Cabazon (have a date shake for lunch in Cabazon and a deep dish pizza for dinner!)
