Oh, to dream, it would be so lovely... I've been passing Peddler's village everyday for the past 2 weeks to go to Silton Swim School. I would like it closer to me, though.

      1. re: aklein

        Finally! I am so excited!!!

      2. The Asbury Park Press reported today that it will be in Shrewsbury, in the strip mall with Staples and Boston Market, across the street from Panera.

excellent news, as well as Fuji moving to another spot in the center, an underestimated sushi bar IMHO.. might make me forget about the Whole Foods in Middletown on my way from Southern Monmouth

          1. re: cantkick

This is wonderful news. My wife and I drive 1.5 hours to Westfield just to go to Trader Joes. Having one in Mon County is going to be great.

The only disappointment is that they wont have liquor sales.

              1. re: bgut1

Oh no, was so hoping for a Trader Joe's with liquor. Well I got half my wish. Wonder how long before they will be opening? Works for me, as I am employed in Eatontown...

                1. re: bgut1

That could change as the TJ that opened in West Windsor started without alcohol sales but recently added the department.
I assume they waited for a license to open up but not sure.
Maybe the same will happen to the site in Shrewsbury.

                  1. re: tom246

NJ law limits an entity to 2 distribution liquor licenses. Westfield & West Windsor make 2.

                    1. re: wizard2

Thanks, did not realize that was the law.

                      1. re: tom246

I went to the TJ's in West Windsor last year and was sort of dissappointed. Small store, very crowded, pretty expensive, limited selection.

                        Where's the Beef ?

                        1. re: scrappyone

Oh no, I love the one in Bethesda, prices seem good, but alas no alcohol in any around D.C.

                          1. re: Barbarella

Try the one in Old Town Alexandria. My parents used to live in the neighborhood and we'd always buy wine at TJ's: 612 North Saint Asaph Street.

                      2. re: wizard2

How is there like a dozen applebee's in NJ... don't they all serve liquor (I've never been in one, just the first example I could think of)?

                        1. re: white light

That's for grocery stores. There has been a lot of discussion and lobbying about that, as the NJ legislature has been considering a bill to lift the restriction.

                      3. re: tom246

There was an article in the Press yesterday. TJs opening in strip mall next to the Eastern Branch library...next door to Staples. It will not carry liquor. Which it probably could not have anyway since there is already a liquor store in that strip.

Supposed to be opened "before the end of the year"

                2. Now my wife is hearing from people in the neighborhood that Trader Joe's has changed plans and will not be opening a store in Shrewsbury as reported previously.

Also she tells me she checked the TJ webpage, and a Shrewsbury store is not listed as 'coming soon' (not sure if it ever was, but it's not there now).

Anyone know what's going on with this ? First it was rumored to be in Red Bank, then down near Wall/Manasquan circle, then Shrewsbury, and now this ! Is TJ's coming to Monmouth County or not ?

                    No big deal either way.

                    1. re: bakersma

When I passed by a few weeks ago, it looked like reconfiguration of the plaza had commenced. The following article from July has some info: http://www.redbankgreen.com/2010/07/t...

                    2. I know they are planning on redeveloping Peddler's Village in Wall (same co. did Brook 35). But most plans have stalled lately...so no TJ's there (boo). The TJ's is going to be in Shrewsbury, but not for a while. http://www.redbankgreen.com/2010/07/t...

                      1. Great! Now all we need is a Fairway! Please, Steve Jenkins, tell Howard Glickberg, Harold Seybert, and David Sneddon that Fairway would fly in Monmouth County. There's a perfect space on Rt. 79 in Marlboro, close to Rt. 18, that would be perfect for Fairway.

                        1. re: tomwocat

I agree, Fairway is a great store. Would love one down here. From what I hear though it is no longer owned by Seybert and Sneddon. Glickberg still part owner and Jenkins still there, but an investing group owns them now.

                          1. re: charmel

Is there any update on whether TJ's is coming? I spoke to a employee of Staples (next door to the proposed location) and she said it was coming in November...

                            1. re: J M S

I emailed Trader Joe's. They replied with "no comment". They did say that new openings will be posted on their website: http://www.traderjoes.com/stores/comi...

They are still doing construction/renovation inside. To the best of my knowledge, they are still coming, according to a few other stores in the mall

                                  I hope this is true.

I have a friend who owns a business in that strip mall. All the owners attended a meeting last week and TJ's IS coming to Shrewsbury but not until February.Darn was hoping alot sooner!!!

                                  2. re: wizard2

I was in the Staples today and saw that they were doing major reconstruction. Guy told me that they are shifting around the store to give some of their space to Trader Joes. Said that it would take about two more weeks, and when they were done, construction would start on the TJ store! Looks like we'll have it by the end of the year.

With all the vacant commercial real estate in Monmouth Cty you would think they wouldnt have to move stores around and do so much construction to create a suitable place.

                                          1. re: J M S

I read it in the APP last month.

                                        2. re: tom porc

TJ's has an infamous marketing strat (if you want to call it that) for not announcing locations until the doors are officially opened. Westfield and Windsor experienced the same grand opening mystery.

                                  3. re: charmel

Not nearly the flagship a Fairway would be but Top Tomato (finally) opened this weekend in Holmdel. Did anyone other than myself make their way thru the crazy crowded parking lot and store on Sunday? The number of cart holders really messed up the parking area. I was a bit disappointed by the produce quality. Anyone else get there?

                                    1. re: HillJ

There is a thread for the Freehold store. I think most of us got the same reaction. The quality of their produce is very inconsistent.

                                      1. re: yCf

which is why I didn't start a "new" thread...not worthy enuf. But boy the 1st weekend reaction to a new, long awaited food market opening, sure brings us out. I was hoping for so much more.

                                        1. re: HillJ

Top Tomato actually opened up on Thursday and I went on Friday which was crowded but not over whelming. Have to agree with you in general the pricing is all over the place and so is the quality. If you pick and choose you can get a good deal but if not careful you may end up getting the short end of the stick.

                                          1. re: JerzeyShore

it can't possibly be a worse store than that gawdawful a&p/superfresh there in holmdel. blech.

                                            1. re: Mr. Bingley

I have to laugh Mr. Bingley...you mean having a fireplace inside your grocery store doesn't wow you? One of my least fav in the area.

                                2. Someone is doing a lot of work to that space in Shrewsbury, but they are still not giving any info away on TJ's website. I have my fingers crossed.

heard this weekend; that TJ's was coming to the Marlboro area - somewhere around the intersection of 520 and route 9 - near the Lowe's. is this true?

                                    1. re: loveeatin

I actually heard that Whole Foods was going there....but who knows? I just hope they put a Trader Joes somewhere in Monmouth......although I do have my fingers crossed for the eastern side!

                                      1. re: loveeatin

I heard that TJ had make some inquiries about the former Pathmark location on Rt 9 and Rt 537, but they were going to hold out to see what happened with Whole Foods directly on the other side of 9. My assumption is that once the new shopping center breaks ground, the former Pathmark shopping center will make plans for a much needed shopping center renovation and TJ would then consider it. The size is good for TJs and with WF potentially going across the street, the "center" of Marlboro shopping would shift slightly away from Wegman's/Target making this forgotten area which once was the heart of Marlboro shopping (early 1990s), more valuable. So it would be a good decision in my opinion.

                                        1. re: VJLA

A correction: it's at the junction of 9 & 520. Also, with the closing of the A&P (on 79) and Pathmark, there are now no supermarkets in Marlboro. Both Wegmans and Foodtown are in Manalapan.

                                            1. re: eleeper

A&P went bankrupt. Is it still open? If so, then you're correct.

                                              1. re: RGR

It's in reorg bankruptcy (I forget which chapter that is). Both the Marlboro store and the Old Bridge one are still open.

I also thought of the Shop-Rite but frankly I can never remember exactly where all these boundaries are, and they're actually pretty meaningless. The Shop-Rite in Aberdeen is closer to me than the one in Old Bridge, eve though I live in Old Bridge.

Does anyone know if the Asian grocery talked about for the old Acme on Route 79 has opened yet?

                                            2. re: RGR

Wrong. There is still the Shop-Rite of Marlboro, located on Rt. 9 North (in a plaza with a Home Depot and a T.G.I. Friday's restaurant).

I cannot understand all the chomping at the bit, frenzy. It's just another overpriced, overhyped supermarket.

                                                1. re: Tay

Tay-I disagree that it is overpriced. I think they offer quality merchandise at very reasonable prices. I am looking forward to comparing prices with our local stores. Plus, they offer a friendly atmosphere & some items you might not find at other stores.

                                                  1. re: DinnerChick11

My perception (based on one store in Massachusetts) is that some of what they have is very reasonably priced, and some is not. It may just be that I don't appreciate what the high-priced items are giving me, but I think one has to pick and choose.

Then again, that's probably true of most stores. :-(

ISorry, DinnerChick11 but I would never refer to their prices as "Very reasonable"

                                                    2. re: Tay

I would say they had reasonable prices. Went to the one in Westfield recently and found their prices had increased significantly IMHO.

I just saw it too. Finally official! Can't wait.

                                                    1. re: DinnerChick11

Has anyone heard when the official opening is?

they are interviewing for p/t crew now.

I was told yesterday that they were to open on March 11, but I don't know if that's chiseled in stone.

                                                          1. re: Deb Van D

Drove by earlier today and the TJ's sign was up.

                                                    2. Any word on if they would be selling wine and beer? Some of the TJ Reserve labels are about $5 - $9 and fantastic. The Reserve Pinot Noir last spring was just awesome. I have a feeling I will still have to trek to Westfield for it.

No lic for this location. So it's off to Westfield and Costco Edison for those buys.

Was worth the trip tho. TJ's burrata - 8oz for $5!! And it's good! I'm pretty sure that's half the price of Wholefoods, Sickles, and the Cheese Cave! Paired it with some toasted ciabatta, arugula, salami, and olive oil- what an unexpected treat for dinner.

                                                                  1. re: amv

All this over a grocery store, wow. Don't get me wrong there are some interesting buys @ TJ's...but the mayhem is just over the top.
