downtown eating w/ kids & gluten/dairy free

We have friends visiting from Cinnicinati next week and have 3 kids (10, 9 & 7) among us that'll be dining with us (week night). The kids are all fairly adventurous eaters although my friends are a basic meat & potatoes type but willing to try other things. So I'm looking for something that'll please us all with maybe a uniquely Chicago vibe, mid pizza joints though as 2 of us are gluten & dairy free (we do alot of salads and seafood when we eat out usually). We're looking for something in the downtown/River North general area.

  1. How about a pizza joint? Quartino's is a good option for your mix of diners. Small-plates Italian, but pizza and pasta are just a small part of the menu. Lots of seafood, meat and vegetable options and a nice selection of cured meats. Oh -- they offer gluten-free pasta and other dishes, too.

    1. Sounds like Hugo's might be a good bet. Hugo's Frog Bar is the sister restaurant to Gibson's Steakhouse next door, and they share their kitchen, etc. Hugo's specializes in seafood, whereas Gibson's in you-know-what. This means you and the kids can enjoy seafood at Hugo's while your friends eat what are actually Gibson's steaks. It's on Rush Street near Oak. The vibe is similar to a steakhouse - i.e. boisterous - although only somewhat; it's not nearly as boisterous as Gibson's is.

Wherever you go, you may want to let the restaurant know ahead of time of your dietary restrictions.

      1. Weber Grill has a gluten-free menu.
