What Has Happened to Sushi Sugar on St. Clair?
I went in to Sushi Sugar for lunch the other day - it used to be really nice inside with friendly service (the owner used to wait tables) but now the sign is painted over and it was PACKED with about 30 or so grade 7-8 kids eating food from other places and taking up all the tables and making tons of noise. There was one table of adults who were trying to have lunch over the din of all the kids - there were no servers that I could see. It was like being in a school cafeteria. I couldn't even get to the sushi bar/cash area to explore further. Needless to say I turned and headed out the door. Has it changed ownership? What's happened? I am hoping it was just a bad day....

Its changed names and management and is now called KoMe Sushi. The food has become more cosisten and the serivce is great.
Chris the manager as a business decision started to market its lunchtime to the students of Oakwood CI down the street - a healthy alternative to the McDs, and seems to have been successfull doing it.
I actually went back in a couple of weeks ago to try it - the service was really good (same friendly server who's always been there) and the food was good too - there were also more rolls and things to choose from which is a bonus. A bit expensive though so I won't go as often as I'd like for lunch. But definitely worth becoming a regular place for me - and I went a bit later so there weren't as many kids.
Got a chance to try Kome last night. I agree that it's a bit expensive for what you're getting. We had a sushi combo (6 california, 6 salmon and 6 assorted nigiri), a soft shell crab appetizer, a maki roll, a bowl of soup and a salad and the bill came to $51. The soft shell crab appetizer was very good, the soup & salad average and the sushi combo was fair (shari too cold & al dente and some fish were not the freshest). Quality is above New Generation but below Yuzu. Service was completely erratic. Very friendly and attentive when you could get him but there were long periods where we were waiting (borderline neglected). He was also very sneaky. After dropping off our soft shell appetizer, he asked if we wanted some soup or salad. He made it sound like an offer like it was part of the sushi combo I had ordered. When we got the bill and saw the separate charges for the soup ($2) and salad ($4), it left a rather bad taste. I had no issues paying for the items but I disapprove of how it was handled. Just something to be aware of should you go.
When we arrived, there was a table beside us who had been patiently waiting for their sushi platter for quite some time I think. We heard them inquiring a few times on the status while we waited for our order to be taken. The waiter kept coming up with excuses (misplaced, accidentally given to another table, etc.). They asked if theirs could be expedited since they were starving and had been waiting a long time. The waiter promised that they were working on theirs next. Then he goes and delivers a platter to another table in plain sight. The poor couple beside us at this point gives up and leaves. Another thought to keep in mind if you're in a rush!
