Asian Shaved Ice ?

  • 3

It's summer and we're looking for good Asian Shaved ice with interesting toppings (for example palm seeds would be excellent).

We usually go to L'Epi D'Or for our shaved ice indulgence and it comes loaded with red beans, peanuts, taro, aiyu, glass jelly, barley and plum syrup.

I am also aware of Halo Halo in Filipino restaurants.

Any other suggestions?

  1. The manju shop on Jackson St. in San Jose Japantown serves shaved ice with a lot of those flavors.

    1. If you have a chance, you have to check out "shaved snow", which is very different from shaved ice. The consistency is much smoother (similar to snow). I have pictures and a few words at http://www.thevictorchen.com/snowice-....

      1. I think Hawaiian shaved ice is a syrup over ice with the possible additions of red bean and condensed milk. You can find that in Japantown, San Jose on the weekends and Saratoga Farmer's Market on Saturday.

The Taiwan style shaved ice --- a bowl filled with 9 billion kinds of beans, chewy items, nuts etc is harder to find. There is an ice cream/coffee place in the Korean Food Court at 3561 El Camino Real Santa Clara that has a different take on shaved ice. They have big bowls of ice and they are all themed, We like the "Eat your greens" which is matcha tea flavored ice, green tea gelato, kiwi, honeydew melon balls, nuts if you want etc. Large bowl is enough for the four of us.
