Looking for an upscale restaurant with great ambiance, service and terrific food in either San Diego or La Jolla (or nearby). Thinking of George's California Modern which would pretty much fill the bill, but would prefer something new. Like something quiet, somewhat dressy, and certainly not snooty. Would either Cucina Urbana, Cafe Chloe, or Kensington Grill qualiffy? Are there other suggestions?

I'd go with Farmhouse in University Heights.

In my one experience with Farmhouse, it was packed and noisy, certainly didn't seem like the place for a quiet romantic dinner (I didn't particularly care for the food or service, but I know that is very much a minority opinion on this board).

Georges would fit your bill best, especially the food is very good. Cafe Chloe is also very good but not on the same level and definitely not quite (it has alos the disadvantage to not take reservations). Cucina Urbana is nice but foodwise not on the same level as Georges and Cafe Chloe and also very loud.

While Cucina Urbana is wonderful, "quiet" is one word that definitely does not apply there. I think Jayne's Gastropub might fit your bill, and the service was the best I've had in San Diego.
