Pepy's Galley - Mar Vista - Salsa Rojo is Still the Best

  • 3

I don't know how I can forget that Pepy's has the best salsa in Los Angeles (if you like it hot that is). Damn that is good salsa...(and make sure you get their salsa rojo...the other one is not nearly as good).

  1. Had a very late breakfast (1:30 ish) at Pepy's last Sunday while we observed the last of the Mar Vista Farmers Market attendees wrapping up their purchases. Had their $7.95 NY steak and eggs special. Very good steak. Nice piece of meat with no gristle or extra fat and a very nice beef taste and quite juicy. Cooked as ordered to medium rare. For the price it was a home run. I have to hand it to Pepy's, they do a some very good "home cooked" style food. In the old days one of their weaknesses was that their home fries weren't crisped enough. They have solved that issue very effectively. They also do a perfectly toasted English muffin. So many times I get undercooked English muffins. Pepy's is spot on.

And of course, the salsa rojo. Even my wife is now addicted. She kept murmuring "It's so darn spicy but so good" as she devoured it with her omelet.

Love Pepy's. It definitely hits the home cooked comfort food spot for us. My wife is addicted to their patty melts. It's not traditional but they do a great job there. They'll also cook it rare for me.

Chilaquiles, two sunny side eggs and salsa all mixed together is a great morning after meal.

Went again for a late lunch/brunch on Sunday and I discovered something that was NOT good. Their chicken fried steak was pretty poor. The steak it's self was a regular steak that was pretty gristly and not pounded out enough. An unpleasant experience, unfortunately. The gravy was passable, but even that was a C at best. I got the impression that, because the steak was hidden by the gravy that they passed off a piece of meat that was definitely sub par.
