Heya guys,

I'm seeking agar jelly powder... any sources you might recommend? I have no idea where to start looking.

There's mailorder (DC Duby in Vancouver, OTB in Toronto), or you can get agar (kanten) in Asian grocery stores (Miyamoto, Kim Phat, Kim Hoa, others). I think I saw a molecular kit at Despres Laporte as well.

Depends on what kind of application you want to do. If something like yokan or the jelly balls for bubble tea, stick with the local grocers. If molecular, go with the mailorder and also get yourself a fine balance.

Ooooh those stores you suggested have opened up a realm of possibilities I had not contemplated. Not aiming for bubble tea; however, I was pondering a recipe for a dark chocolate agar jelly. Browsing those online stores puts a whole new spin on it! But I will take a look at Miyamoto for starters!

      Thanks, Wattacetti!

Ooo maybe this means that Fleur Sauvage nearby might have it. Thanks for the suggestion.

They also sell it at Merci (Jean-Talon, Ontario and Maisonneuve). Price wise though, my favorite place to get agar powder is at that "big" asian grocery store in Chinatown. It's like $3 for a small packet.
