Awful meal in Susanville

My husband and I traveled to Susanville for business. Quite a lovely but remote part of California. I searched CH to find some dining possibilities. So many places listed to stay away from! There were mixed reviews on the Sage Hen. Someone had posted in 2007 that it was an awful place. In 2010, someone replied to that post saying they ate there all the time and it was fabulous.

I rarely ever speak up to say something is awful. I guess I prefer to leave something positive, but I was just compelled me to return and speak up. The entire dining experience, not just the food, was poor. It was awful service. We were told that it was Basque night and that our server would tell us the specials. We waited for 30 minutes with just water. When the server came over, she stood there with her pencil to her pad looking at my husband like..."Well, give it to me" She didn't say a word.. When he asked her about the specials, it was as if it was a burden to go find out what they were. He ended up having Shrimp and seafood pasta and I had roasted chicken. Both entrees were very poorly made. The sauce on my chicken tasted like it was from a packet mix and my husbands pasta was terribly fishy. I couldn't help but think of Gordon Ramsey and how he critiques entrees on Kitchen Nightmares. I could not recommend this restaurant to anyone! We should have gone to the Black Bear Diner.

We travel through Susanville on our way to Redding sometimes; I agree it is a stunning part of California. Is there anywhere that you have eaten that you liked-I'd love a recommendation I wish I had one to give you-but sadly I don't...

Sorry - I was just there for work this week and have nothing to recommend. I ate at Happy Garden, not good or great. I also ate at El Tepeyac. The carnitas were the worst I have ever had. The pork tasted boiled. But the tortillas were freshly made and the beans were fine.
