Pea Soup Ham Bone Dilemma

Everybody was so great solving my last food quandry, I thought I would consult with you again.... In our house it is just the two of us and my husband does not like to eat ham or split pea soup. However, I like to eat split pea with ham soup very regularly.

I am trying to find a grocer or butcher (I'm Coquitlam based but will travel if must) where I can find just a ham bone for my soup...without having to cook a whole ham and eat it until I oink. Any ideas?

Thanks for considering my question.

Choices carries smoked ham hocks. They're small (maybe the size of a child's fist), so perfect for a small batch of soup.

Thank you so much for your answers. I have to admit that although I faintly remember hearing the name before, I just had to "Google" ham hocks to see what they were.

That's great. I really appreciate your quick and helpful replies!

Smoked Ham Hocks are perfect for this. If you find it too smoky, you can parboil it for a few minutes and discard the water. You can also get smoked ribs or even bacon (not a sweet kind - a good German bacon will work - but you won't get the gloss from the gelatin in the bones).

Often smoked ham hocks are too big, although the Choices' ones above sound about right the ones I get at Granville Island seem to be huge. Some pig. Anyway, the good news is that the butcher can saw them in half, so you can make two batches.

Definitely ham hocks. Most grocery stores carry them. I also buy pork bones from Safeway and use those too. Or, you can use a smoked turkey wing or leg found in grocery stores. I say use use ham hocks though.

Well, if you can't find just a ham bone, you could try using the end cuts of prosciutto from a local deli.
