Update: Louie Mueller's BBQ, Taylor, TX

I was recently driving from East Texas to Austin via U.S. 79 and stopped for a late lunch at Louie Mueller's. It was my first visit since Lance Kirkpatrick's departure. Lance was the late Bobby Mueller's long time right hand man. I feared the worst, but the food (at least the brisket) is as good as ever.

I ordered two sausages and one slice of brisket only to be told that they were out of all sausage except the jalapeño sausage. There's nothing wrong with the jalapeño, but it's just not as good as the original beef sausage, which I think is the best sausage on the planet. So I revised my order to make it two slices of brisket and one jalapeño sausage. When asked if I wanted "lean or tender" brisket -- an apt choice -- I opted to tell the truth: "I want it fatty." That fat is where the flavor is and there isn't much fat left after hours of smoking anyway. And I fine the lean pieces to be a tad tough on even the best brisket. In truth, the brisket I was given was among the best I've ever put in my mouth, and I've always said that while the brisket is very good at Mueller's, it's not their best meat. I won't reconsider yet, because I love the sausage so much, but the brisket was pretty much flawless. If one wanted to find fault, it was heavily peppered and the peppered crust was quite thick to the point that those with delicate palates might like it a bit less peppered.

This first visit was a week ago today (Thursday). Then the next Monday, I came back by , again for a late lunch, primarily to get my dose of sausage. Well, as luck would have it, there were no sausages and no ribs left. So I had to just eat three slices of brisket. Again, they were exemplary. But damn, I want some sausage!!!

I love Louie Mueller's. The perfect package, really. Great ambiance, great food, great tradition. I was pretty nervous when I heard Lance left. But sounds like things are still smokin' along perfectly.

    Thanks for letting us know.
