Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina

Western NC: Brevard - Dillsboro - Asheville - Cashiers (& Greenville, SC)

Hi --

We will be in western NC next week for a full week. Wondering if there are any tips on restaurants in the area (Asheville, Dillsboro, Cashiers), even down to Greenville, SC. Looking mainly looking for BBQ, meat-and-three, local type restaurants. Thanks so much.

Cheers!!

From the Mills River rest head west to the trafic light and make a left toward H'ville---on the right in front of a hardware store there is a guy with a cart that does a great bar-b-q business every afternoon. Always busy, never tried it but it must be good. Since I love to cook I ate in more than out so that is about the extent of my roadfood knowledge of the area.

  1. I live in Mills River and the cart they're talking about (above text) is Perry's and I haven't seen him there in months. :-( Doesn't mean he won't be there when you come by, but just don't get your hopes up. Haven't asked the HW store why he's not there anymore. Before that, in front of Waycaster's auto is a taco truck that's good (I know you weren't looking for those, but if you're going by... ). cheap too!

I wouldn't bother with the Mills River rest, but that's just me (does have a decent basic breakfast). It's always busy though. We like Kosta's Kitchen in Skyland (same plaza as the Skyland PO). I think they have a website. Good basic breakfast choices and super nice people. Probably falls into your meat 'n' 3 category or "local".

Hot Dog World in H'ville is a local institution. Not great, but decent (I only get the hot dogs) and super cheap. Mobbed every day. And on the topic of hot dogs, there is Dogtown in Mills River (right near Mills River Restaurant). Better than Hot Dog World, but not nearly as kitschy. :)

12 Bones for ribs and BBQ (S. Asheville and Asheville locations) are very good. My favorite locally. Also, Hubba Hubba is good for BBQ in Flat Rock village. And while you're in Flat Rock Village don't miss Flat Rock Bakery. A must for thin crust pizzas, sandwiches and baked goods. Really nice place to eat outside (same space Hubba Hubba uses).

I've been to Tracy's Farmhouse in Brevard and was not impressed. :-/ Haven't been in a couple of years though.

Have heard the Beacon in SC is pretty much a tourist trap, but I have not been.

Caro-Mi also falls into the "kitschy" category. BYOB (which I like). Mobbed on weekends. Good, not great. More of an "experience" than great food. Cabin feel right on a river, so waiting for a table is kinda nice.

there are lots of great restaurants in this area, but in my opinion, not a ton in the categories you're looking for (BBQ, meat 'n' 3s, etc.). Lots of really good indy restaurants though. Maybe more in G'ville and Dillsboro areas??

    1. Carolina Smokehouse in Cashiers is very good BBQ.

      Carolina Smokehouse @ US Highway 64 W, Cashiers, NC 828 - 743 - 3200.

      1. re: Littleman

I'd heard they had closed. Am I wrong?

        1. re: Leepa

Nope they are open. A little young lady answered the phone. You never know though. BBQ joints close left and right.

      2. I hope you won't take the the wrong way, but you're getting some scary suggestions via whatever method you've been utilizing. For example, Grammy's in Cedar Mountain is one of the most disgusting places I've ever been forced to eat because there is NOTHING else in that area (where I was mountain biking and thus unable to wait to eat.) Mill's River restaurant: also a never-again. Several places you've noted in G'ville or S'burg I've never heard of, and I get around.

That said - Wade's was a pretty good find on your part. It's the only place I'll eat in Spartanburg. Make sure to say "rolls" when they ask "rolls or cornbread". The Beacon is an institution, I grew up eating and cruising there so it holds a place in my heart, but I can no longer put it in my stomach.

Henry's in G'ville is OK but nothing special. I would just bypass G'ville if I were you.

Caro-Mi is Tryon is another institution. I don't much care for overcooked veggies and salty country ham, but lots of people love it, and it is in a charming location.

In Asheville you want 12 Bones for ribs and bbq, also Hubba Hubba in Flat rock for the same. If Early Girl meets your criteria, but all means go, and include Sunny Point as well.

Give us more of an idea what "local" covers. If you are just looking for casual food, rather than just bbq and meat n three, then I highly recommend the Admiral, you can find a zillion posts about it if you search.

        Enjoy your stay!!

        1. re: danna

Early Girl, Sunny Point and Tupelo Honey in Asheville all dish up Southern food (and other styles) that is primarily sourced from local farms. 12 Bones or Luella's for BBQ in Asheville. I wouldn't put BBQ Inn on the list.
