I'm assuming you want Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis). If you have a bombilla and the mate already, you can just get the elobarado leaves. Saquitos are also available.

Best selection I've found is at Catalina Market on Western just south of Santa Monica. They have at least three brands as I recall.

There is a tea made with coca leaves (the raw material of cocaine) that's drunk at least in Peru, and quite possibly across the region. It doesn't have the same effect as cocaine and supposedly helps combat altitude sickness. It might even be legal since I don't think you can make cocaine from dried leaves. My coworker actually brought in some chocolate-covered coca leaves that her sister had brought back from Peru... tasted like tea leaves, and left me with a headache.

I hear ya, hermano. Just got back from a few weeks in Uruguay and Argentina, and am missing the mate as well.

In Culver City at the Grand Casino Bakery, you can buy yerba mate in bulk or pre-made over the counter...like Starbucks! Their alfahores are pretty darned good as well, even though they're not dipped in chocolate, the manner in which I prefer.
