Dinner on Block Island

DAMASO Jun 30, 2010 04:27 PM

Taking the wife out to "the Block" next week... it will be her first time out there. Would love to take her to an very romantic dinner one of our nights. I used to live out there but haven't been back in almost ten years. Are the standards (Manisses, Atlantic Inn, Winfield's) still the places to go?

We stayed at and ate at the Manisses, which was good but not exceptional; sorry, I can't speak to the other two. I didnt' find the dark room they put us in very romantic either, especially not with the party of 14 next to us. Although we were on our honeymoon, I was scouting excellent food over ambience, and for that we went to Eli's. Completely delicious, so much so we went back the next night. Definitely get the asparagus/artichoke/lemon,etc. salad. Innovative, fresh, and yummy food. Good luck!

I haven't been to Manisses this year. In past years, it has been sometimes good and sometimes not so good.. Stop by in the afternoon and see if you can reserve a table in the garden. It's lovely and romantic there. Even if the food is just average this , you will love the ambience.

Skip the Manisses. Have a drink on the porch of the Spring House - then head over to the Atlantic for dinner. Take her to Eli's as mentioned on another night. And Winfield's. Dead Eyes is supposed to reopen if you're in the other harbor. Another night, get a drink at the Narragansett and watch the sunset, or down to Payne's to wallow with the sailors. Just get out or be good and drunk before Walter starts to yowl... :)

It's great to see Chowhounds who appreciate the dining opportunities the Block has to offer. Can't wait to hit the Oar during the day and the Shoals @ night also.

Agree on Eli's... The best of the island in our opinion. We thought everything else was mediocre...

The dining room at the Manisses can be a bit dark, but booking a table out in the garden is very lovely. I've never heard a person complain about a meal there, its all delicious!
