Sunny Grill - Mar Vista

My son likes this place. But I had been unimpressed with the couple of things I tried over the years. That is until I had their gyro the other day. Now that is a tasty item. I first had a chicken version and then a beef one. Both were excellent. Fresh, hot and very filling for $6.49. If you are in the area and like gyro's I say that Sunny Grill will brighten up your day - even during our "June Gloom" season.

It's on Venice Blvd. just where Mountain View Ave. T's into Venice on the N side of the street. They cook everything to order, so prepare to be patient. They do have a drive-thru and a small parking lot if you want to eat in (which I have never done).

I added a place link for SG to the Chowhound data base.

  1. I will have to re check it out. I was unimpressed too and thought it was expensive because with extras, and everything was an extra, burgers got to be over $10 and this was 8 years ago when I just moved to LA. I'd thought they had survived because there was nothing else in the neighborhood. Now there is competition I will have to check back and see if they've stepped up their game.

One of the things I found somewhat remarkable was the quality of the beef they use in the gyro. Too many times that is the Achilles heel of the beef gyro. This was excellent beef. So very tender. I'll be interested in your assessment. Like I said, I too was distinctly unimpressed with the food I'd had before I tried the gyro. Also, they are really nice and so very polite in the dealings I've had with the guy who is normally taking the drive-thru orders.

    2. I liked the place when it used to be Demi's and gave it a couple of tries after Sunny first took over but, like you, was underwhelmed. Maybe it is time to give them another try, at least for the gyro. How does it compare with the one at Mezza?

Still looking to get over to Mezza to try it out.

      2. Had another beef gyro today. Added 2 packets of tapatio hot sauce (they have the little to go packets - which are hell to get open!). Great combo of flavors. Still love their beef gyro - such wonderful, tender beef.

I've driven by that place a million times, I'll have to check it out.

        2. Somehow I haven't had another beef gyro from Sunny Grill until today. Still wonderful. This is a multiple paper towel lunch however as there is enough tzatziki in this thing to float the whole fleet in the Trojan War.

I have to try their lamb and beef combo gyro one of these days as I see plenty of satisfied customer write ups on that particular model. Anyone here ever try one? If not, and you're in the neighborhood, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

so they have a both a beef gyro and a beef/lamb mixture ?

thanks buddy, i'll hit it up shortly. luckily, it's pretty convenient too. i may follow that with a crepe form the crepere or a chili cheese omlette from peppy's galley sounds like a decent lunch to me.

I still haven't had the beef/lamb mix one. I can warn you off the chili cheese dog there. Just a very weak dog and overly salty chili the other day. Won't make that mistake again. Still really like their beef gyro. Just be prepared for the amount of the tzatziki. You might ask them to go light on it if you don't like too much of it. I enjoy the flood, but not everyone will.

i usually get that crap pn the side anyhow, so i'm pretty good to go.

          2. I used to go there quite a bit when I worked down the street a few years ago. Their food is pretty good, and the beef gyro is quite tasty.

However, the owner is one of the more unpleasant humans I've encountered in the service industry. Surly would be too kind...try as I did, whether by smiling or expressing compliments, she simply couldn't even crack a smile and gave the impression dealing with customers was a horrible inconvenience. They finally lost my business for good thanks to her unpleasant attitude, and I shall never return. I know many others had similar's really too bad, as the other help was always courteous.

I use their drive thru exclusively, so I have avoided that issue completely.

i'll still prolly try it out anyhow, irregardless of the owner not flashing me a smile or whatever.
