Make Vanilla Sugar Without Vanilla Bean?

Is there anyway to make vanilla sugar with vanilla extract?

1-2 cups sugar to 1 tsp. vanilla extract, (depends on the strength of your extract) hopefully you have some homemade, stir well in a bowl and that's it. It's not enough liquid to melt the sugar in any sense. Sugar is hygroscopic and will absorb the moisture readily. Spread the sugar out on a parchment or wax paper lined tray and allow to dry for a few hours. Store in a plastic bag; you may have to crush up the sugar with a rolling pin.

I suppose you could soak a piece of cheesecloth or something and place it in the jar of sugar. Don't know if it would work because extract evaporates quickly, but hey, it might.
