40th Bday celebration in DTLA

We are going to be celebrating a friends 40th birthday by spending the night at The Standard Downtown, and having drinks at the roof top bar. Looking for dinner recs. She has mentioned Church & State as an option, but is open to anything in the downtown grid. Maybe sushi in Little Tokyo? Is Ciudad still good? Water Grill to stuffy? What do you think?

  1. One recent thread on better restaurants downtown: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6955...

    ADD: Another potential target: http://www.wolfgangpuck.com/restauran...

    1. "Church & State", I thought, was fairly awful... no offense. Don't know what your budget is, but doing an omakase (sushi chef's tasting menu) at a really good sushi place like SUSHI GEN would be a nice gesture.

I wasn't crazy about CIUDAD either. "Water Grill" is great if you like high-quality seafood (with the prices to match).

I live downtown and am trying to try as many neighborhood restaurants as possible.

      1. I can recommend the sushi bar at Chaya Downtown; it's across the street from The Standard Downtown.
        yum!

        1. I spent my 40th at Rivera. Fantastic. Great cocktails.

          1. Depending on the vibe you want, in addition to the list Servorg provided, Lazy Ox (mentioned on the list but by someone who had yet to have the pleasure of dining there) is excellent for small plates but casual, more elegant is the new First & Hope (located, where else, at 1st and Hope) serving interesting and tasty twists on Southern fare in a Supper Club atmosphere.
