Old Mill & Castle Street Cafe back-to-back weekends ( Berkshires )
last weekend ( fathers day ) our family went to the old mill in south egremont for dinner. I have been many, many times ( live 5 miles away ) but since I had back-to-back dinners out I thought I would compare & review. I love the bar area, its very cozy & rustic. we know the bartenders, so its always very welcoming. i had a chop salad of cranberries, feta, and pine nuts which was light & fresh & tasty and porcini ravioli which was delicious. it was an app portion so it was small, i could have had double the size. i am drawing a blank on what everyone else ordered, but i know everyone was very happy. we had 3 hot fudge sundaes at the end to split though...with coffee soco ice cream & a caramel drizzle. with a couple drinks each and a good tip, it was $40 per person
last night we went to castle street cafe in great barrington for my moms bday dinner. she loves the bar side ( they have 2 dining rooms ) and they actually just started outside dining that we were hoping for but it was raining. i had a portobella, tomato, spinach, & mozz appetizer. it was OK, a little bland. my sister had the fig, proscuitto, and blue cheese app and she said it was just OK. the other 2 had the house salad that is very nice with local greens. for dinner 3 of us ordered off the bar menu, we had 2 black bean & shrimp burritos which i thought were terrible. no flavor at all and the inside was just mush. my sisters caeser salad WAS delicious though and my mom had steak au poivre and that was tasty too. we ordered a chocolate chip ice cream cookie sandwich which was yummy. with a couple drinks and a good tip, it was $50 per person.
i think i will stick to just having a cocktail @ CS before going somewhere else for dinner...and the OM will always be great....i havent been to john andrews in over a year, that needs to be the next stop.
