Sylmar's not as bad as some think.

Pasta Michi on Foothill has pretty good Italian; El Chaperal also on Foothill at Sayre, good Mexican (a branch of the Presidente/El Queso Grande restaurants). Fiddler's Coffee Shop on Glenoaks is decent standard coffee shop fare, and there's another mexican place just down the street, Casa Torres, never tried it.

Remember also that Sylmar is "freeway close" to Mission Hills, Granada Hills, etc. Porter Ranch and Northridge is just ten minutes down the 118...

Casa Torres is a very interesting place.

Large, open dining room and separate full bar.

The food is pretty good but not GREAT.

FRESH tortillas made by an interesting machine. Many selections at reasonable prices.

Can be loud, so perhaps not for visiting.
