Short Summary of Last Weekend's Eating

Had a lot of fun eating and drinking last weekend in your city while visiting our daughter.

Friday night: First had a very nice cocktail at Central Michel Richard then walked in without a reservation to Rasika and the 2 of us were seated towards the back at a small eating bar where a chef was preparing food. Our server was excellent and offered many helpful suggestions when he learned that we were 1st timers. The crispy spinach was excellent and creative and I loved all the different flavors going on. We also got a very good eggplant appetizer. My daughter got the boneless tandoori chicken (delicious) and when I could not decide between lamb chops and black cod, the waiter suggested that they could do a "surf and turf", a piece of the black cod and 2 lamb chops. It was a great suggestion. Rasika, in my opinion, was our best meal over the weekend.

Saturday: Lunch at Oyamel. Nice atmosphere. Aloof and unfriendly waiter who tried his best to "upsell" us on anything he could and was clearly disappointed when we did not order more. Food was good not great. My daughter ordered a scrambled egg special and I got 2 tacos, one with fish and one with pork belly, they were ok, nothing special.

Saturday night: Cocktails first at the W Hotel on their roof deck. Seemed to be a very chic chic place. Expensive but very delicious cocktails. Then walked to Sirac for dinner. We started with a very nice bread basket and 4 of us ordered pastas. I got a combination of 2 of their pastas, one was a special with morels and duck and the other was shrimp with tagliatelle. Everyone loved the homemade egg pastas. The winner seemed to be the Bolognese.

Sunday: A late lunch at BGR in Old Town Alexandria. The burgers were very good but I was disappointed in the fries which they claimed were homemade and twice fried in the classic method but tasted frozen to me and the onion rings were better than the fries but still not great.

Sunday Night: Dinner at Zatinyha. Very nice atmosphere. I will start by saying that I am not a huge fan of Mediterranean food. That said, it was very good compared to the Meditteraean that I have had. I especially loved the shrimp with dill. My wife and daughter loved the hummus and the homemade puffy pitas.

All and all, it was a varied and interesting weekend of eating.

    how was the service at the newish W's roof? it used to be utter crap as I assume they assumed we were all tourists and wouldn't be back so screw us.

    1. The antojitos are the weak part of the menu at Oyamel. The gold is in the main courses.

        Care to share some of your recommendations for the gold on Oyamel's menu? Lately, I've been in the mood to go there so your suggestions would be appreciated.

          I was very impressed recently with the albondigas and the chile en nogado. Both are exquisite and show off the depth possible in Mexican cuisine. Red snapper veracruzana was also very good.

          By contrast the salad of nopalitos are a bit too salty and crunchy. The chips and salsa (first order is free) are very, very delicious but also intensely salty.
