Driving from New York to Salem (and back)

I'm driving from NYC to Salem, MA and then back home. I'll be on 84 going north and likely 95 coming back.

Are there any good seafood restaurants to stop along the way as I'm driving? I'm willing to make slight (but probably not significant) detours along the way.

I really appreciate the help making my roadtrip delicious.

  1. My recommendations all lie along I=95 (favorites marked with *). From east to west there is Water Street Cafe in Stonington; Abbot's Lobster in the Rough in Noank (a clam shack menu with a super view--although some prefer the nearby Seahorse); Seaman's Inn in Mystic; Seahorse* in Groton; Flanders Fish Market in East Lyme; Liv's Oyster Bar* and Johnny Ad's in Old Saybrook; Lenny and Joes Fish Tale* or Bill's Seafood in Westbrook; Westbrook Lobster in Clinton; The Place (outdoor spartan) in Guilford; and Lenny's Indian Head Inn in Branford. All are fairly near I-95. Strangely, I don't have a recommendation for New Haven but contemplating this list you'll probably be hungry before then!

    Liv's Oyster Bar
166 Main Street, Old Saybrook, CT 06475

    Flanders Fish Market
22 Chesterfield Rd, East Lyme, CT 06333

    Lenny's Indian Head Inn
    RR 146, Branford, CT 06405

    Fish Tale Restaurant
86 Boston Post Rd, Westbrook, CT 06498

    1. My recommendations as you're coming down 95 through CT:

      Johnny Ad's, Old Saybrook

Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale, Madison and Westbrook

Lenny's in the Indian Neck Section of Branford

We have eaten in eaten in each of them and in each will have great lobster rolls, nice fried clams, oysters, etc. The first two are closer to the highway, but Lenny's has a big back deck overlooking a salt marsh where the ospreys are nesting. All have excellent seafood. We live in Litchfield county but make the trip down there for seafood. We live near 84, and there really is nothing good along 84 for good seafood border to border.

      1. Max's Oyster Bar in West Hartford Center is right off 84 and about halfway between NY and Salem, never had a bad meal there, they have outdoor dining also

The one time we did eat at Max Oyster, I ordered fried oysters and, Ironically, they were very disappointing, overcooked and dry, among the worst I've ever had. Ourfriend had fish and chips and found the coating too thick to eat. My wifes grilled fish taco was good.
