Best ice cream shop in Fairfield County?

  • 24

Looking for the best ice cream shop in Fairfield County (preferably around Norwalk-Stamford-Greenwich area). Someplace we can go during these hot summer nights - think Cape Cod type ice cream shops where it's full of families, high schoolers, and kids enjoying a summer night out. Outdoor seating would be great. So far, I can only think of the Dairy Queen in Stamford. Always packed even late at night. Any other recommendations for something preferably not a chain? Thanks!

  1. I generally go to Sunny Daes with my kids. Ice cream is made on site plus they have soft serve (ice cream and yogurt) and the Fairfield locations also make gelato (not sure if all locations do but I would assume so).
The do have a location in Westport and Stamford too. Not sure what those areas are like but the 2 shops in Fairfield are usually quite busy on summer nights with lots of kids and families.

Honestly Sunny Daes is overpriced and not the texture I like my ice cream to be. I've been there a few times now and it's always way too icy and it's like $5 for a small cup

I think you are not correct. We also have a Sunny Daes here in Trumbull. I've been in the Trumbull, Black Rock Tpt and RT 1 Fairfield locations in the last 10 days (My daughter loves their gelato).

A small cup or single scoop cone of ice cream or gelato is $2.90.

We happen to like the texture of the ice cream. I don't like the gelato.

    2. Dr. Mike's in Bethel is nowhere near the shoreline, but has to be in the running for best ice cream in Fairfield County. I'm not a fan of their signature chocolate lace flavor but their other offerings are sinfully rich and creamy.

DS, it is near the shoreline...candlewood lake. :-))

And jfood is glad someone had the guts to state the chocolate lace is not the best they have ever eaten. jfood was questioning his palate (then again it was the fifth scoop of the night). The vanilla ice cream itself was fantastic, but jfood and mrs jfood found the lace itself a little weak in the flavor department. the oreo flavor last week was the true winner.

Another non-shoreline rec here: Il Bacio in Danbury. Mom & Pop shop with handcrafted ice cream and some creative flavors. They do a nice chocolate lace, but they are better known for their "Cardiac Arrest" flavor - chocolate with chocolate on top of chocolate (7 different kinds loaded in there!). They also do some fun candy, cupcake and cake batter-type flavors and one called "Shrek," but I can't recall the ingredients. It's not fancy, nor is it near anything too exciting - just in a little strip mall with a Rite Aid, a pizza joint and a chinese takeout place (neither of which are worth mentioning by name!). But that ice cream is fantabulous!!

          1. re: saturngrrl

I second Il Bacio. I'd also recommend their soft ice cream and italian ices to the above listing. Just really good stuff all around.

        2. There's Gofer ice cream shops in Darien, Stamford and Greenwich. Also Carvel ice cream shops in Stamford and Norwalk. If you want something non-chain, you could try Daniela's Gelateria in Greenwich and also just across the state line in Rye, NY is Longford's. There used to be a little chocolate store in Riverside that also sold ice cream - located across from the train station - but I haven't been in a few years so not sure if it still exists.

There is a Longfords in Old Greenwich, as is Darlene's Heavenly Desires for ice cream and gelato

            1. re: Johnct

Not exactly what the OP was asking for but Danielle's in Greenwich is the best gelato I have had in years. I hope they stay open and consistent!

If Gelato is now in scope jfood would add gelitissimo in New Canaan

                1. re: jfood

What about "the filling station" in new Canaan? Any good? It looked interesting but I was not about to ruin my harvest supper meal by trying it out then...

                  1. re: cubanat

                    pass on it

                    1. re: cubanat

Filling Station burgers are yummy! Try it when you need a quick fix!

            2. Further out than where you're looking, but Walnut Beach Creamery in MIlford has the best ice cream of my eating career. Really interesting flavors and very fresh taste.

Word. Just went there this weekend and it was shockingly good. Can't wait to go back!

              2. There is a nice place for kids in East Norwalk called Mr. Chubby's or something like that which has good ice cream. It's right by Overton's and Harbor Lights restaurant. I also recently found a place in Wilton called Scoops which reminded me a tad of a great place from back home in CA called Big Dipper (in St. Helena).

                1. For folks in the northeast part of the county, Rich Farms Ice Cream on Rt-67 in Oxford (just into NH Cnty) has wonderful ice cream, ranking up there with those mentioned above.

                  1. The Ridgefield Ice Cream Shop on Route 7 towards Danbury, located in an old Carvel building, does lovely soft serve ice cream. I understand Michael Stern (Roadfood) goes there almost daily.

                    1. A second for Rich's in Oxford; and if you're in the Newtown area, Ferris Acres on Rt. 302 is definitely worth stopping in.

                      1. I have tried all the best gelato's in NYC, including Gromm, Laboratorio, etc... and I think that Gelatissimo in New Canaan is better. It is the closest to what you find in Italy (i.e. not too sweet!!) For american-style ice cream, Gofer is actually pretty good but SUPER fatty.

I agree with Farfalle about Gelatissimo and TrishUntrapped about the Ridgefield Ice Cream Shop

                        2. Def Rich Farm in Oxford! I drive there from Norwalk once a summer for my fix. Its so good. There is also a place very close to UCONN I dont know the name of it but it may have been mentioned here..anyone?

Went to Bar Rosso for dinner (frickin' awesome) then hit up next door at Volta for gelato. Can't say I loved the atmosphere or the large cafe menu BUT the gelato was pretty damn good. 3 flavors in a small cup. What was odd to me and if someone can verify that wouild be great: article in shop said they make all the gelati & sorbetti but on the back kitchen window it's stenciled: Il Laboratorio Del Gelato...is that just a saying that the owner likes or are they getting it from the NYC gelato master?
